WARNING: AOL's Instant Messenger installs spyware

I just did the update today from my previous version of AOL Instant Messenger to the current version of 5.5.3572 and I made a shocking discovery after the program was installed....

After I installed it I noticed that my hard drive showed a pretty good loss of space. So I went searching for all the temp files and deleted them. I then found a new folder under "C:\Program files\wild tangent" and another new file folder under "C:\windows\wt" I then went into the system registry and found TONS of keys etc from a company called Wild Tangent.

I ran AD-AWARE using their most up-to-date spyware definitions and it told me that Wild Tangent is DATA MINING software, ie., it's spyware.

If you try to remove Wild Tangent through the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the windows control panel, it won't work. The program won't come out. You MUST use AD-AWARE program to remove the spyware from your computer.

I think AdAware is misleading. From what I can see, Wild Tangent is a framework for advertiser supported online multiplayer games. Check out their web site: »www.wildtangent.com/

In particular, read the privacy page »www.wildtangent.com/default.asp?···=privacy

If that page is on the level, the software doesn't sound like spyware. I'll agree that AOL IM had no business installing it without your permission, though.

I don't do gaming so I don't care. AD-AWARE says it's data mining so it gets removed.

The new AIM software also comes with a button for launching online games and inviting buddies to play, Odell says. If the buddy accepts the challenge, the game launches in a separate window in the gamers' computers.

"It's a natural extension of the social interaction you get with instant messaging," he says.

Currently, eight games are available, but the list will continue to grow, Odell says. The games are provided through a partnership with publisher Wild Tangent.

This games feature isn't earth-shaking but important nonetheless because it serves as a magnet for drawing users to the service, Osterman says. "If all your friends are playing games on AIM, then that's an incentive for you to sign up for AIM," he says.

According to the Lavasoft website, Wild Tangent software, while it's used to run games through AOL Instant Messenger, is also violating the users' privacy. So it's your decision if you want to keep it on your computer or not.

Re: WARNING: AOL's Instant Messenger installs spyware

No, Wild Tangent is indeed a form of spyware. It can collect data and upload it to various companies, invading your privacy and using (small) amounts of bandwith.

Bottom line is, Wild Tangent is a piece of crap software anyway, whether you think its spyware or not. Delete it with Ad-Aware - AIM still works fine.

I agree with MOSFET. I do not want it or need it. Get rid of it along with AOL's IM.

What data is Wild Tangent uploading?

It should be easy enough to see determine what data is being uploaded using Ephemeral or similar packet sniffing software on a test computer.

Ad-aware, and a lot of us, are a little overboard calling both tracking cookies and keystroke loggers "spyware".

It leads people to think spying allegations are all silly exaggerations and urban legends. But clearly some spying does go on.

On the other hand, AOL's AOL service allows them, as with any ISP, to totally spy on their customers Internet habbits, but they haven't.

And since it would be so easy to see what is being spied on, I'm thinking AOL wouldn't risk doing much more than tracking searches.

So I think we need more data to have proof that spying is going on.

Until then it is just words.

Give up on AOL. They have been lame since 1994...

Try Trillian for a chat client. Multiple protocols and spyware free.

I don't know about Wild tangent, but I know Viewpoint Media player is not spyware. It is an excellent 3D player. I have it on all three of my browsers. I don't have any Wildtangent files. I don't have Aim either.

Not sure but, I noticed Wild Tangent trying to access the internet on my firewall. It was trying to check for a newer version, maybe thats what you are seeing. Again just guessing.

You need to disable the WildTangent control panel. Its located in the 'Other Control Panel Options', on the main control panel. There you will have the option of turning it off or not, if you do a folder search, you may be able to find it, with a .cpl and delete it. Good luck.

@telus.net

This is what Wild Tangent is collecting:

System Configuration and Product Usage Information
We collect certain system configuration information through our software such as your computer's CPU speed, video card configuration, and DirectX version. We use this information to adjust the way our games and other software work in order to ensure their best possible performance. We also collect certain product usage information through our software such as the number of product launches and time spent playing a product. We use this information to determine how users are interacting with our products and what features users like and dislike, in order to find ways that our products may be improved and to help us develop new products. We may share this information with select third parties, but when we do so we only share it in an anonymous aggregated form.
I, too, think it's a bit alarmist to call everything "spyware", although there are many malicious programs out there. Many of the popular anti-spyware companies target anything that sends data without your knowledge, maybe thinking that they don't want to miss a product and lose customer confidence ("product X catches this product, why don't you?"). I'm surprised that more popular products such as Windows Media Player or even Windows itself are not on the "spyware" lists, according to that criteria. In this case, if you have read and accepted the license, you will know exactly what data is being sent. The WT client also checks for updates to it's game engine.

The engine is necessary to run the games that WT publishes.

Dude wild tangent is kewl, its a lightweight 3d game client that you can download games from the net and play. Some are quite fun.

If you consider wild tangent spyware because it sends system info to their site, then you should consider all the latest microsoft operating systems and applications spyware, since they do the same thing.

I dont agree that wild tangent or veiwpoint is true spy ware either...it is the reason why some adaware scanners(ad-aware being one of them) dont include both WT and Veiwpoint in their spy ware definitions.
