winxp channels

I just set up a new d-link 802.11b wireless network, and need to know how to change which channel my computer(winxp home) tries to access the network on, so I can try a different channel.
I really need to give this a shot, because my normally 5000/510 rock-solid connection only gets 1800/500 through the router even when there's less than a foot of distance between them! tia

The channel is set at the AP end, not the client. Check the router/access point settings.

hmm... when I change the channel in the ap setup, the comp no longer recognizes the network.

should I reboot the comp when I change channels?

The client should find the AP on the new channel without rebooting (even in Windows).

Are you using XP or the D-Link utility to manage the wireless connection?

What does XP or the utility show in terms of wireless properties? - signal strength, ESSID, channel, etc.?

No, I didn't see the new Mel Gibson movie. Let me know if there's a new Mel Brooks one, though.

Ok... I know how to change the channels now, but it has no effect on the speed. . Does anyone have any recommendations to help improve this? This is very disappointing.

my signal strength is excellent, and I use the d-link utlity to manage it. SSID is simply wireless, which I named it while I was testing all the stuff.

Try the DSLR tweak test. It's likely that your MTU or RWIN settings need to be bumped.

Also check power save settings on the client adapter. They should be off. Good luck.

Hardly stupid, and it's only simple if you know the answer. We've all been there. Next time, you'll help someone else.

Enjoy.
