Lindows anybody?

Anybody here running Lindows yet? I am and loving it. Great all-around OS, and the CNR tech is one of the best things to happen to these OSs.!!

I've been running it about a month, I tried Knoppix, Overcloxix, PC Linux, Redhat, and several other flavors searching for an alternative to Windows to offer customers.
Being a Windows Fanatic this has been a learning experience for me. So far I Like Lindows an can see it has great possibility's but needs some more refinement. Some of the click and run software is nice and it is also a good thing not having to run a Firewall and Anti-Virus Software!

You had better make sure that you aren't running any services if you don't have that box firewalled. You behind a router?

Definately, ALL computers should be behind a firewall, it doesn't matter what the OS. Linux can be made pretty tight, I tend to run a lean box when I can, but I still put it behind, or a firewall on the box.

Yes I am Behind a router. I will probably install something as far as virus protection along the way however the general consesus from most of the experienced Mods on Lindows.com state that it is not really needed.
Thats why I am playing with this to see what is what etc.
Since you brought it up are there any "Free" and "Easy"
AV and Firewall programs out there for Linux?

You don't need antivirus.

As far as firewalls go, the big ones are ipchains and iptables. There are a bunch of front-ends available to configure these guys. I personally don't have much experience with either of them, but I'm sure someone else will be able to point you in the right direction.

Well, I'd say you don't need an on-demand virus scanner, but still, does it really HURT if you use a scheduled/cron job & f-prot/bitdefender? Everything's free, doesn't take much space. There are a few linux viruses out there, it takes much talent to get infected, but rootkits are out there.... And esp. if you don't have a firewall/IDS on the box, make sure you do a regular scan.

nobody's out to target your little box....but if you want to be super-duper secure, run the firewall. viruses? There are viruses for every OS, but your chance of getting one in linux is very very very small.

ran lindows for over a year, 3.0, 4.0 and 4.5. It;s been pretty fun. Yoou might want to look at a new distro called MEPIS. If I had my choice, right now I'd pick the MEPIS.:)

Tell that to the guy running the password cracker against my FTP site a couple of nights ago...

That's BS. People *are* out to get your "little box."

yes, people *are* out there.....but that doesn't mean you needs to spread FUD. 99.9% of them don't care about your little linux box. If you're scared/worried, run a firewall....end of story.

So, it's true that a hypothetical 1% (your statistic, not mine) of people are out to hack their way into your computer, but it's "FUD" to recommend someone run a firewall?

If you're not scared/worried, don't run a firewall, don't worry about staying patched, get rooted. End of story.

No. When someone pretends that lots of people are out to get Joe Blow's linux file server, they're spreading FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt). Now, IMO, everyone should run a firewall (we all should want to be extra secure), but they also need to know that next to nobody is targeting thier personal linux box. So like I said, If you want to be super duper secure, run a firewall.

Just get a router with a built-in firewall so you can save your processes memory for other things instead of "Oh NO! This program wants to access the Internet! Should I let it?"

Tried installing Lindows twice on my old AMD box. The install failed about at 15% complete each time I tried. Decided to download the latest Mandrake Linux distro (9.2) and I love it. Learning how to manually install RPM packages was a bit trying but I finally managed to get Sun JAVA installed and working. With all the applications that come bundled with this distribution (many are MS compatible) I don't know why more people don't use it. I like it so much I'll give a few bucks to Mandrake.

First of all, I'm not pretending "lots" of people are doing anything, because there's no need to pretend that script kiddies are out there and they, in particular, mostly target boxes on residential broadband IP's, including Linux boxes- or have you forgotten the Red Hat root kit from a few years back?

So, what I'm doing is, I'm correcting your misinformation, which is twice know you've flippantly stated "nobody" is targeting personal linux boxes, which is, as I said, complete BS. You're not helping anyone by promoting a false sense of security.

I would agree with the statement that no professional security expert or actual hacker would attempt to hack their way into your personal machine, be it Windows or Linux or Solaris or whatever, however, that's not what you said.

No, now that you've changed your statement to something more sensible, and stopped saying that I'm spreading "FUD" because I want people to recognize that there are plenty of script kiddies out there looking to break into any box they can any way they can, just for "fun", there's nothing really left to argue about, is there?

changed my statement? Umm, I actually QUOTED something I said BEFORE your post. In fact, you purposely chose not to quote it in your response, so you could continue arguing. Why wasn't it "sensible" the first time I said it?

That's right, I'm leaving out part of your post to continue the argument, by saying "there's nothing left to argue about."

If you read your three responses, they actually say three different things; I think you should take your own advice about being an "arguing forum geek."

You win, I'm wrong, or whatever, nobody is interested in a linux box, so don't worry about it.

Or is it next to nobody is interested in a linux box, but everyone should run a firewall (but only if they want to be "super secure"?) and there is no need to be worried about "FUD" like script kiddies and such.

I don't know. Whichever your opinion is, it's absolutely right, and if you disagree with the above statement, please change it to say whatever you like.

Have a nice weekend!
