What you described there is called a Provisional ballot.
From »regrec.co.la.ca.us/voter/faqs.htm :
"What if I just moved and did not re-register? Will I be eligible to vote?"
"If you were previously registered in Los Angeles County and have not re-registered since you moved within the County's borders, you can vote at the polling place for your new address. You will be asked to vote a provisional ballot and provide your new address and your previous address on the provisional ballot envelope."
I belive .. but am not sure .. that Provisional votes are only counted if needed. So all the regular votes are counted first, and they don't open the provisional envelopes and go through the trouble of verifying them all unless it's close enough that the provisional votes could swing it. Also, voting provisionally is not equal to registering, you must register (your new address) under separate cover (the pollworkers give you a form). | |
