| I think the tool is good when the target PC has antivirus that just happens to be outdated; however on systems that do not possess any antivirus, I prefer to do a full scan with a more comprehensive tool.

Does anybody know if running this utility requires admin group privileges? I just ran this version from a limited user account in WINXP SP1 H.Ed. I modified the settings that were configured earlier from within an admin group account in order to eliminate one of the drives from scanning. Then I clicked on SCAN. That moment, ZAF 4.5(Latest) popped up to alert me that the Truevector service had just been terminated, "Do I want to restart?" I was a bit shocked but managed to click on 'Yes.' Then I tried to stop the Stinger scanning process. Ultimately Stinger got hung up and I had to kill its process. Then I decided to log out which resulted in no response from Windows until I manually shutdown ZAF. I hung out at the next screen (logging out....) for what seemed like an eternity. Finally I got the normal login screen.
It is clear than ZAF crashed since I can see the Internet Log files were rebuild. I'm not sure what happened here but it did spook me. I've never had much success recovering from a hard crash of WINXP. Thankfully they are extremely rare in my case.
For the time being, if I run Stinger from the limited user account, I will run it with admin credentials though I can't be sure this is at the root of this particular crash. |
