| Problems- Need a master Tech
First let me apologize because this is a long post. I really need expert advice. I have searched and asked everywhere and no one can really help with these problems. So if you could offer help I would be most thankful.
I keep getting the message about ActiveX controls not set. Even though my settings are default which are what the troubleshooter recommends.
Since my settings are correct, what could be the problem?
I found a worm on my PC about 3 weeks ago and cleaned it. Could it have done some damage to my registry with my Internet security settings? If so, how can I fix this?
The trouble shooter also mentioned that I should click Yes on the certificate. What certificate? I have never been presented with one. I can't seem to get past this error about ActiveX controls no matter what I do.
The troubleshooter said that if my Windows update does not work neither will the tests ( such as at PC Pit stop). I went to Windows Update and sure enough it won't work either. Previously I could update with no problems:
Here is my Window's update message when I try to update:
"Software Update Incomplete"
"The Windows Update software did not update successfully. Below are some suggestions to help you proceed: You may have clicked No when prompted to accept the Trust Certificate. To allow the Windows Update site software to install, click Yes when presented with the Security Warning dialog box. Your Internet Explorer security settings may be set too high. To install the updated software and access Windows Update, Internet Explorer security must be set to medium or lower, and active scripting and the download and initialization of ActiveX controls must be enabled."
> I was never prompted with a Trust Certificate. I do not get the security Warning dialog box.
>my security settings are set as suggested.
>active scripting and ActiveX controls are enabled
Any suggestions as to what is going on here? Searched and tried their suggestions and can't seem to get anywhere because of this same ActiveX problem.
One more interesting window came up about: please check to see if your cryptographic service is working properly. Did the check and it seems all in order as well. That is what is so frustrating, everything seems in order but definitely isn't.
BTW, I also tried to turn off my firewall, cybersitter, adware, and Spybot and try again... didn't make a difference.
I have Highjack this. Here is my log:

| reply to sherylt18 Firstly, I would suggest that you set ActiveX to "Prompt". Any site that needs to use ActiveX can be added to your Trusted Zone
You have to have the windows update site in your "Trusted" zone, as it downloads an ActiveX component that scans your computer to see which updates are needed. -- Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt. |

| reply to sherylt18 Try going to Windowsupdate with LOW security settings for internet zone in Internet Explorer. If it works than it's your security settings interfering. If it doesn't, than it's something else.
I don't see anything suspicious in your HijackThis log, but wait for someone to verify.. |

| reply to sherylt18 Was there an error number??? I've had trouble with updating, and after tracing it all the way back, through one error to another it was connected to my implementation of EFS and the fact that I wanted a higher level of security (I forget the exact policy now).
But the error number was crucial since the web site info was really useless otherwise. |

| reply to sherylt18 Windows Update will work with MSIE (MS Internet Explorer) security settings set to the default levels.
If you are set to the default levels something else is wrong.
The message occurs when the update fails to complete for many different reasons. It might appear if your network connection failed momentarily.
1. Which update are you trying to get?
2. How many times has this happened? How much time has gone by with this not working?
3. I don't suppose you remember which registry entries you altered or which virus it was? (It is always a good idea to keep a system log and to write this sort of thing in it.)
There is/was a bug you can get in the Windows Update where something like your message would appear. I'll look for it in the MS Knowledge Base now.

1 edit | reply to sherylt18 I went to the MS forum for Windows Update »communities.microsoft.com/newsgr···wsupdate and found this: quote:
Which antivirus program are you using ? That may be blocking the successfull installation of the controls or, it may be another 3rd party software such as a pop-up/ad/cookie blocker that is interfering.
Open the Windows Update.log found in the WINDOWS folder with Notepad and look for any error code(s) associated with the failed attempts to access WU. If you locate an error code(s) go here: »v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
I'm thinking even *if* your problem does turn out to be something you removed, you might want to post this same problem over in the BBR Microsoft Support forum. »Microsoft Help |
