Dell 4600c with 82865G onboard video with XFree86
I installed Mandrake 9.2 on a Dell 4600C today. It has the Intel onboard 82865G video.
When the display manager starts, I get the graphical logon screen, but it's at some huge resolution, where the monitor only shows a small amount of the upper left corner.
It behaves this way using either the Intel 810 or 865 drivers.
Anyone ever seen that, or have any idea what in the XF86Config-4 might cause that? Thanks in advance.
Ahh...never mind. Appanently the 4600 and 4600C models have recent bios updates (A05 in the case of the 4600C) which fix video ram issues on non-Windows systems.
I installed that and set the video ram in the bios to 8MB and alls fine.

Actually for some other Dell systems with 865G video there is no fixed bios yet (Optiplex G270), but downgrading to A01 (from the broken A02 and A03 versions) will give the full amount of videoram (A02 and A03 limit the videoram to less then 1MB regardless which bios setting you choose).

Interesting. On a really old Dell (GX-110), there is no BIOS setting for Video RAM. I had a similar problem with the i810 chip; it acted like it had maybe 2MB of VRAM. The only way to set the VRAM seemed to be in XF86Config in the "Device" section like so: VideoRam 32768. After that I had more pleasing (as pleasing as this crappy chipset can be) resolutions/depths.
Thanks for the memories
