CBS takes offensive against Dish Network/EchoStar

A follow up to this article »EchoStar Preparing to Drop Viacom Channels

I have CBS on this morning and CBS keeps scrolling a message across the bottom of the screen addressed to Dish Network/Echostar subscribers.

quote:
Attention Dish Network/Echostar subscribers: You may lose WCBS-TV as well as Nickelodeon and Comedy Central. Call Dish Network NOW at 1-800-333-DISH and tell them you want to keep the channels you paid for!

Yea, I saw that too. Also, late last night on CBS. I was thinking about dropping DirecTV and going to DISH Network. No way now. Besides, I get my locals just fine off a good ole Winegard antenna mounted about 45 feet in the air. Nothing like a crisp signal line of site to Cedar Hill, Texas.

Should be interesting as this goes to the wire ...

quote:
The deadline stems from a restraining order imposed by a federal judge that was set to expire March 8, after which EchoStar must cease airing those 15 O&Os if the two companies have not reached a settlement. Local affiliates not owned by Viacom are not affected.

If no agreement can be reached by the deadline, all of the Viacom networks carried by EchoStar would go dark. In addition to top-rated CBS, the networks affected include MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.

Yep, Viacom is trying to gouge the consumer by raising rates. Dish is refusing to do it. The problem is Viacom, not Echostar. Todd

BET & Spike TV -- saw the messages...BLACKED OUT

I posted this in a similar thread, but I just saw these messages on BET and Spike TV being blacked out by DISH TV.

I have no doubt that Viacom is money hungry, EchoStar is guilty as well I am sure.

They need to work something out because in the long run it is the subscriber that will lose out.

Could they MABYE work it out OFF the damned air? Having 1/3 of my screen BLACKED OUT by DISH TV constitutes a failure of service punishable by a refund of a month of service, me thinks. They did it last night on BET and this morning on Spike TV.

Keep the legal BS in the corporate offices guys!

I'm sure they will work something out at the last minute. This is only posturing. Todd

Well, I'm waiting for an HD antenna to be installed, so that would be a workaround for losing CBS (I never watch daytime TV anyhow, so as long as I can have their primetime available I don't care) .... but my 19 yr old would probably throw a major fit over the loss of MTV etc type channels.

If push comes to shove and the CBS channels are lost either temporarily or permanently, you'd think Dish would do the right (i.e., good p.r.) thing and adjust billing. However, I suspect all they'll do is to send out a ton of free-PPV coupons instead...

Is it me, or does this whole thing remind anyone of the bruhaha between Cablevision and YES? You folks in the NYC metro area know what I'm talking about.

What I think you people dont understand is that Viacom made a trap. They jack up rates, then scroll those messages on their own channels making Dish customers call up and complain as if its DISHs fault.

I was thinking of doing it as well once my DirecTV commitment is up, since I heard that DISH has less compression issues, but now that I see this: NO WAY!

Viacom has every right to do what they are doing. Echostar does not want to carry certain Viacom channels, so Viacom is holding strong and waiting for Dish Network to crack. In the end, Dish Network will be the loser.

So Vito Corleone had every right to charge for protection? Viacom is causing Dish Network's subscribers to crack, just as Vito Corleone threatened his "customers" they would lose something as well. Since Dish's base package rates are so low (as compared to Comcast) this will really put a strain on income and may affect the base package rate. Viacom is hurting the consumer. This same thing could've happened to your beloved Comcast--but seeing as Comcast already charges $35+/month for standard cable, they wouldn't even need to pass on a rate increase (although they probably would for the hell of it).

I don't see what the huge problem is. I'm an Dish Network subscriber from Boston (one of affected O&O markets) and I know both sides will have to reach an agreement. There is too much at stake not too.

It was a similar situation that prompted me to initially drop Cox cable and switch to DirecTV.

I don't remember the year, exactly, but I remember waking up after New Year's Eve and switching to Fox to watch my football team play, and wouldn't you know it, the screen was replaced by some legal jargon about an expired contract and such. At the time, I saw it as a great hypocrisy for Cox cable that they would be so put off on having to make room for a package of Fox affiliated channels in an all or nothing dilemma. Sort of put Cox in the same situation they put all of their customers in with the channel line-ups and bundled tiers. It stinks, doesn't it?

Actually in markets were they can't work out local rebroadcast deals with single stations they DO drop the monthly locals fee a buck or two... I would guess they would in this case to.

What is INCREDIBLY STUPID on Viacom's part is they are doing this NATIONALLY, making every cable and DTV subscriber aware if it too.
If I were a cable subscriber with 10% increasing bills every 6mo, I be on the phone to them as why they haven't been standing up to these grubbing A*holes too instead of just endlessly passing it along.

My bet is VIACOM will be the big loser on this one, and good chance NOT just with DISH!!!!
