[Modem] Westell/Linksys Ethernet don't talk to each other

I have the newest Westell WireSpeed and current Firmware for it from Bellsouth. I also have a new LinkSys Etherfast 10/100 card in my PC. I can't ping the ip for the modem using ethernet. I can using USB. Tech support tells me I should just use USB but that's not an acceptable answer. I thought I was relatively PC savvy but I'm not so sure know. I haven't un-installed the USB drivers yet but am wondering if I installed the ethernet drivers will they work. Also the new INSTALL WIZARD cd from bellsouth keeps coming back with "Check your modem connection...." won't go any further in the setup. Acts like it can't find the ethernet card.

Any ideas....really want to use ethernet card...need to install a wireless later and this needs to work first....
Thanks

GAtechie.

Have you installed the drivers for the NIC? Does it show up in Device Manager? Can you ping your self 127.0.0.1? Post a ipconfig /all.

Don't use the USB port. USB networking = no good.

EDIT
And don't use that stupid CD that came with the self install kit. You don't need it. Look at the BS FAQs

Yep....I can ping 127.0.0.1 just fine. When I run ipconfig /all I get all the IP info back.

Linksys shows up in the Device Manager and states its working properly. I even unistalled and reinstalled it just to make sure it was working correctly. The linksys install disk states that the driver is supposed to be in the Win2k folder...there isn't one so I pick the one that it found that was supposedly newer.

I'll look at the FAQs for better info than what is on the BS disc. Any other ideas???

It would be nice if you posted what the ipconfig /all said. Do a reset of the modem, there's a recessed button near the Ethernet/USB/Phone cable jacks.

You should be getting a 192.168.1.X?? IP address from the router/DHCP server in the Westell.

Have you tried a different cable? Are you using the cable that came with the install kit? Have you tried it with a different PC?

EDIT
And post what IP address the NIC has. If it's in the 192.168 range or the 169.254 range they are private IP addresses and no one is going to hack into your system by posting them.

Ethernet is Plug-n-Plal which means no software to load, everything should be ready, all you need to do is configure it to work together, if you really want to make it work, get rid of that router and get yourself a hub, or go and check out »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »What is the proper way to configure a Westell modem and a Linksys router? for more info. But if you ever have to reset the Westell you will have to do this again so a hub is greatly advised to use over a router. If you are not getting a DHCP WAN IP on your computer from the Westell, what about the Linksys router, when you connect it up do you get Gateway IP ( default ) of 192.168.1.1? The Westells' Gateway IP is 192.168.1.254 and you should get this IP if you have the Westell connected direct to the computer. If you connect the Westell direct and do not get this and you connect the Linksys up direct and do not get this then I would say bad RJ45 on NIC issues on the PC. If you have a router then I assume you have more than one computer, if these two devices do not give a private IP on one computer, then connect them on a different computer and check for a private gateway IP address. It is more likely that there is something wrong with the computer than it is both the Westell and Linksys.

unhook your USB & RJ45.
uninstall Bellsouth Driver Kit/USB drivers.
hook up RJ45, reset your modem.
reboot your PC and then try and ping your modem, success?
Read FAQ on Tweaking connection with NIC.
