| Cheap, not perfect DSL, phone: MCGI/mpower
We signed up for Mpower voice (5 lines) and DSL (384, then 768 kbps SDSL), and then we moved, and had to have everything reinstalled! The prices are better than PacBell, but getting everything installed right was a LOT of work - doing it with PacBell is easier, mostly (80%) because (IMNSHO) of PacBell's screw-ups and roadblocks thrown in Mpower's way. I'm convinced PacBell is trying to maintain their monopoly by making Mpower's life difficult. I'm a techie - I know quite a bit about DSL and phone service. I found the many people I've worked with have been friendly and competent and helpful - especially Wendy, but except Bryan. The reinstall cost us nothing. Speed, latency and uptime are good. The one complaint that I've had that has gone unresolved is that Mpower generally blocks all ICMP packets, so that traceroutes usually don't work. They say they block it because of security problems. Seems like they've used a sledgehammer solution. Better solutions and a comprehensive analysis can be found at »www.cert.org/advisories/CA-1998-01.html and »www.cert.org/incident_notes/IN-99-07.html: I had great trouble getting a phone service price list from 'em; let me know if you need a copy (CA only!). Check out our service - »www.linkify.com -Matthew I've had 5 experiences with PacBell DSL, 1 with PacBell/cingular cellular, and 1 with earthlink DSL, and 1 with Qwest DSL. |
