Are you talking about the recovery console?

can you tell us what's wrong? Perhaps there's a better way of fixing it.

yes this is on the recovery console.

attrib -r c:\ntldr
i tryed but i get the unrecognized error.

copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
with the above commend access is denied because i gave read only
permissions to several files in the registry. i also had installed the free PGP version 8.5
and i was encrypting files. do you think this may affect the problem

how it is possible from the recovery console to change the
read only to the default permissions?

i tryed the f8 last good, safe mode, the repair from the
cdrom, ERD but does repair it because thru the setup
finds the ntldr,ntdetect.com are missing.

i know i can fix the problem very easy if i dump a fres install but i don't like to do that and lose what i have.
I like to know in problems like that is possible to be fix
or not.

therefore if you can help or if you need more detail info
i be happy to provide to you.

thanks in advance

P.S.
this is on laptop W2K PRO

The path may not be there in the recovery console. Try using the entire path, ie. C:\Windows\system32\attrib.exe -r C:\ntldr

Recovery console by default does not allow access to all folders and drives. This policy must be turned on prior to using it. Without turning on the policy under Local Security Settings, one only has access to system folders.

But if the problem is fixing the bootstrap, isn't there a 'fixboot' command to do just that, instead of all this copy, attrib, stuff?

which is why I was asking about what the problem was, and never got a clear response....

running fixboot then fixmbr should resolve all these issues.

i saw all these commands and i tryed yesterday
the fixboot and i got the message:
do you like to write the boot to another sector?
and i type y.

it was successful
then i type exit to restart but no fix.

i will try tonigth with the fixmbr and the other sugestions and update you tomorrow.

can you tell us the exact error message that you get, and when you get it in relation to the bootup process?

Also, is this a NTFS drive or FAT32?

yes, there is only 1 partition and it is all NTFS.
THERE IS NO DOS PARTITION IN THE HDD.

In the recovery console the default prompt is:

C:\WINNT>

i type \system32\attrib.exe -r C:\ntldr

and the whole looks like:

C:\WINNT>\system32\attrib.exe -r C:\ntldr
but i get the command is not recognizable

i cd c:\ and the prompt comes to

c:\> there i type \Winnt\system32\attrib.exe -r C:\ntldr

the whole command:
c:\>\winnt\system32\attrib.exe -r C:\ntldr

but i get the command is not recognizable

what i have to change in order the command to be successful?

thanks

You are using the wrong commands to recover from boot failure. Stop using those commands and use fixboot/fixmbr.

attrib is apparently not a recovery console command in any case. You hadn't mentioned the recovery console at the time I suggested it.

A few things:
•try the fixboot and/or fixmbr first
•attrib is part of the recovery console, but it is not the same as the one available to the command prompt (fewer options)
•in the recovery console, don't use any extensions or path, just the command name (like fixboot or attrib, not attrib.exe and not c:\winnt\attrib).

download2KBOOT.zip 134,811 bytes
If you have or can get a floppy formatted by 2K or XP or NT and you have a floppy drive, unzip this file to a floppy and try booting from the floppy.

Don't worry... you won't lose your partition. I've fixmbr'd countless times before!

OK i will go for FIXMBR and i will update.

i boot with the win2k boot disk and thru the set up
i get the NTDETECT.com is not the original file that setup copied to the win2k installation.

setup can not copy the file NTLDR
setup can not copy the file arcsetup.exe
setup can not copy the file arcldr.exe

i copyed last week all these files from another win2k system to a flopy but still the boot started with the ntldr is missing.
i will try the 2kboot that you have the 3 files if makes a difference.

i will make the changes and update tomorrow.
thanks for the support.

I haven't see anyone reference this kb article, which describes what to do when you get a "NTLDR missing error"
