LOL OMG Latest AIM DOESNT INSTALL WILD TANGENT!!!

I just reformatted my comp and when I installed the latest build of AIM which was released on March 15,2004, it doesn't install the Wild Tangent crap!! If you look in control panel, you don't see it anywhere!! Guess they saw our threads and listened to us!! YEAH!!!!!

try running adaware and spybot:search & destroy with all updates and see if it finds anything.

Just because a program that used to show up in the control panel no longer shows up in the control panel does not mean that it doesn't exist. Follow pepperxn See Profile's advice, run Adaware and Spybot S&D and see if it detects the WT software.

As I recall the WT doesn't get installed with AIM, it gets downloaded automatically while AIM is running. So if you just installed it, the WT may not have been downloaded yet.

If you see a file AIMWDInstall inside Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles, then the WT installer is present.

Wild Tangent is a company that makes games that "phone home", i.e. spyware. The latest versions of AIM include Wild Tangent games.

OK, so, I guess I'll wait a while before I try an update, see what all of the other people say, once they load it, LOL. Better to have THEM be the guinea pigs, instead of me.

AdAware found
Lookee what I got after installing new AIM 5.5 - and this was without allowing the installer access to the internet. If I had allowed it the full monty would likely have been loaded.

Re: LOL OMG Latest AIM *DOES* install Wild Tangent

Here's updated removal instructions, based on the ones posted here by Goldengamego See Profile. My additions/changes are marked in bold.

1. Close AIM
2. Open my computer and navigate to the folder \Program Files\AIM (Was AIM95 on my system)
3. Delete the file AIMWDInstall.exe
4. Navigate to the folder \Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles (Was \Program Files\AIM95\Sysfiles on my system)
5. Delete the file AIMWDInstall.exe (do not delete AIMWDUninstall.exe)
6. Open add/remove programs in the control panel
7. Uninstall WildTangent multiplayer library*
8. Uninstall WildTangent Web Driver*
9. Uninstall WildTangent Updater*
10. Restart the computer
11. Navigate to the folder C:\Program Files
12. Delete the WildTangent folder*
13. Navigate to the folder C:\WINDOWS
14. Delete the wt folder*
15. Open start/run and type regedit
16. Delete the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WildTangent*
17. Add the domain wildtangent.com to the IE restricted sites zone (even if you don’t use IE)
18. If this is the only user account on this PC you’re done, if not keep reading
19. Open regedit again
20. Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains
21. Right click on it and hit export
22. Type a name for the file and save it to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents or any other place that all accounts can access
23. Log into each account, double click on the file, and hit yes in the box that appears
24. You’re done

* The items marked with an asterisk can be skipped *IF* the AIM WD Installer was not allowed to run, or given access to the Internet. These steps remove Wild Tangent which gets downloaded by the Installer.

I have a couple additional steps, not related to Wild Tangent but will eliminate some other annoyances that are bundled with AIM:

1. From Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs - uninstall Viewpoint Media Player (unless you use it legitimately)
2. In C:\Program Files\AIM95\sysfiles, delete viewpoint.exe
3. Delete C:\Program Files\AOD and everything within (AOL on Desktop, I don't know what this is but it tried to access the internet).
4. Add the following entries to your Hosts file:

127.0.0.1 ar.atwola.com
127.0.0.1 ads.web.aol.com
127.0.0.1 VTOT.proxy.aol.com
127.0.0.1 ads.aol.com

I knew it!!!! LMAO This is probably AOHells attempt at trying to DL it all onto our machines, maybe thinking we're all that dumb, to trust it the second time? I'll stick with the old version, TYVM.
