1 edit | [Help Me] It's just too slow sharing between PC's.
Hi all,
Looking for some help. Just connected up the following equipment
1 * D-Link DSL-G604T ADSL/router 2 * D-Link DWL-G520 wireless PCi card (with latest driver)
Both my machines are running Windows XP and both are able to see each other (browse folders etc). When I try to transfer a file between the two, if it works, it does so extremely slowly. Sometimes it will take so long, I end up having to kill the task. Both machines are within approximately 4 metres of the router, and the wireless signal strength is excellent, and airplus utility shows link as being good. I have tested the system using the zero wireless service both activated and disabled. In all cases, each PC can see the other, but everything is just so slow. Both PC's have standard NIC's installed and when both are connected to the router using RJ-45 cable, file transfer is very fast. When using the wireless cards, I disabled the NIC's in case of conflict.
Any ideas?
Many thanks,

| First - do you have the latest firmware in your router?
Don't know if you've seen some of the threads referring to the "preamble" setting for wireless communication. This can make a significant difference in some setups.
As I recall, 802.11b used a long preamble, and G introduced the possibility of a short preamble. Devices made in work in mixed environments support both - to an extent. It seems that switching your router to "long" preamble speeds up the wireless traffic considerably in some cases.
My environment: DI624, a hard-wired pc, a wireless with a G520, and a laptop with a G650. Switching to "long" preamble last night made a HUGE difference in the wireless performance. Not sure on your router, but in the 624, it's on the Advanced/Performance screen. BTW: I left the "advanced" settings for the G520 to allow for Long and Short - this seems fine.

| Thanks for the info Jon. I couldn't find a reference to a preamble setting on my router. Weirdly though, my connection is now fine. I'm certain it's not as a result of any change I've made, so I'm quite puzzled. File transfer between the two PC's is now pretty impressive. The only thing I'm not running now is the Airlink utility, but I'm not sure that was causing any problems anyway. I'm not turning it back on though, my system is working, and I'm not about to mess that up!
