How fast should it be?

Hi all,

Further to a question I posted on the D-Link specific page.........

»[Help Me] It's just too slow sharing between PC's.

Can someone please tell me what sort of file transfer speed I should achieve when using an 802.11g network? I have two PC's with wireless cards (both within 4 metres of the router), both of which are reporting excellent signal strength, but the file transfer speed (i.e. copying from a Windows explorer folder) between the two PC's is extremely slow. When I connect RJ-45's to the NIC's, speed, as you'd expect is very good. Can any of you guys with a similar wireless setup copy a 10MB file from one PC to another, and advise how long it took, so that I can compare. Router & PCi cards are all 802.11g devices.

Kind regards,

Lee Richards

Re: How fast should it be?

Define slow. What speeds are you seeing?

Transferring via Explorer is, in my experience, the slowest way to get a file because of the overhead imposed. ZoneAlarm and anti-virus programs can impact the throughput.

Try an ftp transfer or a utility such as Q-Check to measure with any other programs disabled.

Wireless is never the speed of a dedicated Line like a RJ-45 connection. If you look on reviews of G cards the average you will get is about 20 - 22 MBPS on a 54 g card. And the futher you are away the less you will get. Some G cards even offer less. The Dlink is one of them that is horrible on transfer speeds with their G wireless. And the netgear was rated the best at 42 MBPS. So dont be fooled by the G card 54 MBPS there is yet to be a card to acutally go that speed.

For my wireless network, I transfer Tivo/Tvshows from my PC laptop to my other computer. about 1.20 GB and it takes like 9 minutes. And this is normal. On a B wireless network it takes about 50 minutes for the same file. But on a 100 Link direct connected it takes about 2 minutes

Re: How fast should it be?

Thanks guys, I've just done a test at home and a 3MB file took 9 minutes to copy! Obviously I have a problem. All the time during the copy though wireless signal strength was shown as excellent. I must have a config problem somewhere....I'm not expecting speeds to match a hard wired setup, but as you can see, I'm a million miles away from those speeds at the moment.

Thanks,

Lee

Re: How fast should it be?

OK, that is bad.
If you haven't already, try the Tweak Test on the BBR tools page. Also try a couple of different channels to see if some are better than others.

Are there any 2.4GHz phones in use?

Hi Lee,

Did you get to a resolution to your speed problem. I am experiencing the same problem with 3COM USB wireless 11G adapter wit a 3COM wireless DSL/Router 11G access point (all the units are no more than 1m apart). Mine is fast to copy one way (from local drive to a mapped network drive) but not the other (from the mapped drive back to the local drive).
To copy a 10M file, it takes about 40secs one way and upto 5 minutes the other way.

Can you share your findings? or does anyone else have any suggestions?

I am using WinXP, latest patches and drivers.

Thanks in advance

Re: How fast should it be?

Hi songtran71,

No, not yet I'm afraid. I'm starting to get a bit hacked off with it to be honest. Weirdly, about 5 minutes ago I tried to copy another file and everything worked fine,a 10MB file copied in a few seconds. As quickly as that happened though, it went back it it's old ways. Not sure what that actually proves to be honest, apart from the fact that it 'can' work. I'm going to call D-Link on Monday, see what they can do. Even with the router less than a metre away from one of the PC's, it still drops the connection completely on occasion. The whole problem seems to be getting steadily worse.....Another post mentioned possible issues with my PCi cards (D-Link DWL-G520) and Dell Dimensions (which both of my PC's are), so I'll be asking D-Link about that when I speak with them.....

I'll keep plodding on. I'll get it sorted eventually I'm sure.

Hi All,

Nevermind about the question. I have found that the default setting for the antivirus software, "Scan all files access" is a bit much for the adapter to handle. I have changed the setting to scan files that are modified and it is running quite nicely..

Thank you all
