Tried the wrt54g, This is my solution to QOS

I bought a WRT54G and did the sveasoft thing. It's not very good yet. I needed something better.

There are a ton of linux distros out there that will do a simple firewall, few have bandwidth management, very few are easy to use.

I finally found m0n0wall. Http://m0n0.ch/wall/

I don't know anything about linux, but I didn't need to.

It's available as a bootable CD image, it free, and only needs an old PC with 2 NICs and a blank floppy. On boot-up it identified my NICs and was up and running. Everything after that is configurable from a web page (just like any other router). I've set up some port forwarding and some rules to prioritize VOIP, ping, and ACKs.

It's way more powerful than an average linksys, and therefore a little more complicated to configure, but not too bad.

Screenshots say it all.. »m0n0.ch/wall/screenshots.php

Interesting... maybe it wasn't setup correctly? Or the wrong firmware was used. Everyone that I've helped get setup has the QOS stuff working great for them.

But if you can set it up a with the same style of Linux shapping on a older PC then I say roll with it....

Could you share your traffic shaping rules, especially for VoIP traffic? Thanks!

m0n0 looks interesting -- I'll have to try it...

I found some traffic shaping rules for linux if anyone wants to try them:

»lartc.org/howto/lartc.cookbook.u···-tc.html

I attempted to create the holy grail:

Maintain low latency for interactive traffic at all times
This means that downloading or uploading files should not disturb SSH or even telnet. These are the most important things, even 200ms latency is sluggish to work over.

Allow 'surfing' at reasonable speeds while up or downloading
Even though http is 'bulk' traffic, other traffic should not drown it out too much.

Make sure uploads don't harm downloads, and the other way around
This is a much observed phenomenon where outgress traffic simply destroys download speed.

and I also was looking at the QOS/NAT stuff:

»lartc.org/howto/lartc.cookbook.f···tro.html

I'll post here my results once I get my Packet8 device... =)

I've looked at lartc.org, it's way over my head. M0n0wall is all configured through a web page, no scripts (not that I would know what do do with a script anyway)

M0n0's traffic shaping is way beyond the wrt's for now.

I believe that wrt's pre3 traffic shaper set to wan & wlan puts wonder shaper to work on your download only (this is kinda worthless), and when set to LAN all traffic is classified as bulk. anybody care to prove/disprove this by posting their wshaper status.

as for m0n0wall rules..

1 pipe...315kbit source (upload)
2 queues ...source weight 100, and source weight 1
4 rules...
a. queue1,wan,source=ata's IP address,out
b. queue1,wan,ICMP,out
c. queue1,wan,ip packet lengnth=0-80,ack set,out
d. queue2,wan, source=NOT ata's IP address,out

I have 350kbit upload, and chose 315 by running bittorrent and pingplotter at the same time. I adjusted the routers upload rate till I found a good reliable ping rate.

M0n0 has the ability to set up multiple pipes/queues/rules based on packet size, tcp flags, port, protocol, direction.
way beyond the wrt's abilities (I still have much faith that the wrt will get there)

Wshaper daeomon on the WRT54g's works just fine for upload and download. I can flood the entire download and upload stream at the same time, pick up the Packet8 phone and talk away with no audio dropouts. I could never do this with the stock Linksys firmware.

Later versions of the firmware will allow more configuring of the "classes" of the traffic.

I agree. I posted this on the Sveasoft forums a while ago and nobody payed any attention. I am planning on getting a WRT54G and loading the Sveasoft image but with my own custom tc script, optimized for up and down shaping. Not the wondershaper default one.

digiblur,
I'm certain that the wrt firmware will get there and the level 7 stuff planned for the next release sounds really exciting. I got tired of waiting & annoyed by what's been happening over at sveasoft. M0n0wall was so much easier than I expected (Scary linux distro & I don't know linux). I felt that it deserved a mention.

As for wshaper problems please see this post.

Am I reading this right?
Does your wshaper status look better?

I'm not knocking the monowall thing. Run with it if you want. I just find it a hassle to have another PC running that I don't need. I did the PC router thing for a few years, I'm glad to have a small router now.

I don't have any wshaper problems...wshaper is working great over here. I just put in a few no brainer parameters and its up and running. I love it!

You don't have to dedicate a PC as a router. m0n0wall was originally put together to make use of Soekris embedded motherboards:

I love the soekris units. I install 4521's for most of the businesses that I setup.

Nice little unit but the price....ouch... I think I'll continue setting people up with the WRT54g's, its a real no brainer for people to setup..especially the for the computer illiterate. I can pick them up for $82 w/no tax and free 2nd day shipping.

Its always good to have options...use whichever solution you feel is right for you.

I think the WRT54G is a great deal too, but it's unfair to directly compare it's price against that of a Soekris+Monowall set-up.

The Soekris board is rock solid. You will *never* fault it for crashing on you. People run these things where physical access in winter means climbing a tower and smashing ice to get to the router. These boards have hardware watchdogs. Bus mastering ethernet controllers. Aren't these features of some value to you?

The WRT54G is a great solution as a home router if you're around. But if you've got more than a handful of LAN clients, or are not around to monitor it, or rely on it to work, or have an office enviroment... consider spending $200 on a rock-solid solution.

Everybodies mileage varies, but it has been of great value to me. With an $80 add-on it crunches PPTP and IPSec tunnels fast enough to saturate my WiFi and ADSL interface.

I should add, the $82 WRT54G needs the $20 Sveasoft firmware to be even worth comparing to soekris+monowall.

The soekris box is pretty neat, but not needed. I'm using an old PC (no hard drive installed or needed). The software is free (donations appreciated of course, but not required like sveasoft )

Configuration required less than 10 keystrokes before I was able to unplug the monitor and I've never plugged it in again. Everything linux-ish is hidden away, it's all done through a very pretty webpage.

Yep..seemed the easiest way to go. Just download & burn with nero, toss in a blank floppy and presto.
