 | Wow, I just checked out one of the links in the Yahoo article (see below) and it is unbelievably aggressive taking over your browser windows. I normally have Active Scripting, ActiveX, and Java disabled, so nothing happened the first time I visited the link below. But then I Enabled Active Scripting and clicked on this link and all hell broke loose. Who are these idiots that think someone will buy their junk after they mug viewers this way?

| Hah! I just went to that site and my Popki stopped everyone of their attempts to "take over my browser". I'm boycotting a few of these sites including MSNBC, and have written to tell them exactly why. -- Help Us Find The Cure! DSL Reports Team Helix |

 | reply to Zhen-Xjell I didn't get a chance to carefully read the whole Yahoo article or check out the other links (I got to get to the saltmine ), but the one I posted is a good start. I actually had to ctrl-alt-delete my IE to get rid of one of the windows. I am curious if the add blocking programs or the hosts files will prevent this monkey business.
What I am finding more and more is that ACTIVE SCRIPTING is extremely powerful and dangerous. |

Interesting that the "mainstream" publishers and advertisers are following the lead of the on-line porn industry. |

I have everything Disabled in the Internet Zone, so I don't get anything. No bouncing ball or any popups.:) |

 | Agreed wafen. If IE is configured correctly/securely, you won't see the pop-up, pop-under, pop-around ads/window(s). For ads, use the Hosts file, and if you mighty worried use an addition ad blocker. -- Be Careful! Be Secure! Be Safe! |

The best defence once you have been hit by the pop ups is your old freind mr. ALT+F4, which closes any selected window or windows if none is selected. The popups intentionally are made to try to prevent someone from closing them, ive seen them go behind other windows, lurk in the back, and my personal favorite the oversized popup that wont let you hit the close box as its offscreen(alt-f4 baby). Usually there is some form of re-pop command in the web page themselves that when they are closed another one pops right back up, or sometimes 7...or even more, this can quickly crash a medium to low speed conection/system. One of the nastier ones ive seen in the last week has been misleading popups asking if you would like to add bookmark/download/ect, now no matter what you click on the popup window you will get hit, once i clicked the close box and i ended up with 5 new bookmarks and a new startup page, i was not happy(alt+f4 should work:). Last night i installed Zone Alarm, hopefully i wont have to deal with geurrilla advertising as much. But my experience will definately turn into the future of web advertising accross all banner sites (not just *GASP* pr0n sites), they will get thier message to you, by any means necissary, so clicker beware. -- "I am Jacks complete lack of surprise" -Tyler Durden |

Re: Online ads get in your face There seems to be at least two sources of ads on the "passthison" page. First, there seems to be Java script calling for popups. Here is a section of the code:<SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript"> Xoffset= -60; // modify these values to ... Yoffset= 20; // change the popup position. function popup(msg,bak)... function popup2(msg,bak)... function popuppink(msg,bak)...
Then there is also a Macromedia Flash call:codebase="http://download.macromedia.com /pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab... So it looks as if there are two things at work here to bring you so much junk!!
Of note, with disabled ActiveX and Scripting I see NO popups, popunders, etc.
Also of note, it appears that a source of some of those ads and popups is this site: server224.smartbotpro.net
Time to add that to Hosts! [text was edited by author 2001-06-14 15:44:01] |

I left my Active Scripting off and got only prompts for 2 Active X items, which I said no to. Then I turned it on, and got 3 prompts this time. Otherwise, nothing else, and I did not activate PopKi, so I must surmise the hosts file had something to do with it. I am not running any other ad blocking programs, so, yes, hosts definitely has a lot to do with it. I have found that other than a cookie thrown my way which got eaten by CookieWall, I don't have a problem with any of the sites mentioned here. -- JKK

 | It is great to see the veterans around here are well protected and didn't get mugged (I can think of better more descriptive words, but this is a family site ) by these aggressive marketing sites.
One thing that amazes me is the person that wrote the article didn't once mention how easy it is to disable these pop-ups/multiple windows. It is like a a newspaper publishing a story about a new disease and not providing any information how to prevent getting it. I suspect the writer belongs to a website that uses the same aggressive marketing tools and he/she didn't want to get slapped on the wrists, or the editors didn't allow it. |

BuggSpyPet MePremium join:2001-01-24 Canada | reply to Zhen-Xjell Sheesh! I got mugged!!! I have all Active-X turned off but one area of confusion for me has always been the Scripting settings in IE 5.5.
Should everything there be disabled as well (*active scripting, *allow paste operations via script and *scripting of Java Applets)?
I still have a little browser window sitting on the taskbar that won't go away....I don't like this. -- BuggSpy |

| Buggspy, it is the Active Scripting creating the havoc.
I think Orclover posted the solution to getting rid of that extra window - Alt-F4. Thanks Orcloer, I was Ctrl-alt-delting out.
Here is a good post describing the *allow paste operations via script and *scripting of Java Applets.
