Windows XP and IE 6 CPU DLL Issues
Having problems with IE6 consuming 100% CPU utilization? I did. This article outlines a solution for this issue that hasn'tt appeared yet in TechNet.
Upon opening an Internet Explorer 6.0 window, CPU utilization for that IE session would jump to 99%. The following would also appear in the System Event log:
Exception was generated at
Faulting module mshtmled.dll
If left alone, the window would sometimes finish opening after 10 minutes or so. This problem seemed to occur randomly. I never could put my finger on a conflicting program or specific web page that I was trying to open.
It appears that the installation of some of the Windows XP security updates causes registration problems for some DLLs. The fix is to reregister them using the following commands:
Regsvr32 shdocvw.dll Regsvr32 shell32.dll Regsvr32 oleaut32.dll Regsvr32 actxprxy.dll Regsvr32 mshtml.dll Regsvr32 urlmon.dll
To simplify the registration of these DLLs, block copy all of them. Then right click at a DOS command line, select Paste. Each of them should register, causing a success message. -- It's really easy to join one of our Cancer fighting teams. JOIN TEAM HELIX! JOIN TEAM DISCOVERY UD/TSC! |
