[Packet8] Dialed number will not ring 90% of the time

Am I the only one having trouble getting a ring out of a dialed number over Packet8? Works about 10% of the time - rebooting the DTA only seems to help for one or two calls.

Thought it might be my router since no one else seems to be having this problem lately.

Switched from a Network Everywhere (Linksys) NRO41 to a Xincom Twin WAN router XC-DPG502 with the latest firmware Ver 2.1 Rel 0V Built Date: Mar 26 2004. I don't think the firmware to combine the 2 WAN ports into 1 has been released yet.

Hooked up RoadRunner to WAN 1 port (3000/384) and ZoomTown ADSL to WAN port 2 (3000/768).

Have noticed that speed tests on BroadBand/DSLReports.com gets confused on which port I'm using and the Tweak Test does not work at all. Is this related to my problem?

I haven't experienced any problems with Packet8 lately.

Do you see the problem when the DTA is directly connected to your modem?

My P8 didn't ring yesterday but calls went to voicemail. Today I'm having trouble getting outbound numbers. Too bad, I was beginning to think P8 could become a real phone company. My service was great from 1-15 to around 3-15. Every day is an adventure. I enjoy playing with P8 but can't imagine anyone relying on this for business.

You may have hit the nail on the head... Is there anyway you can configure the router to force the DTA's IP to only use one of the WAN ports and not either?

Have not yet tried to connect the DTA directly to either modem. Last time I tried this with RoadRunner (Toshiba PCX2500 cable modem), I could not get back on the net for anything. Had to call tech support to get me back on line.

The ADSL modem uses what may be a special crossover cable. Am hesitant to connect this cable directly to the DTA. Of course I now have a few extra regular CAT5 cables I could try, but am not sure if I should go this route, since ZoomTown furnished this special cable to use with the Cisco 675 ADSL modem with an Intel NIC card (PRO/100+ Adapter).

Xincom says to use the CAT5 cable supplied with your modem.

Will report back results if I connect DTA directly to either modem.

Any suggestions meanwhile?

Don't think I had this outgoing problem until last Thursday, April 1st, the same day I got the new router and hooked it up.

I have always liked P8 after the voice breakups stopped.

Hope yours improves.

we used to have issues with dialing numbers, but found it was the phone instrument we were using was not of good quality.

I suggest you try another handset. also, we do have problems sometimes when calling our bank and getting balances.. but with the new .33 s/w not an issue any more

I know I can just uncheck one WAN port in the router's setup to use only one WAN port or Broadband connection. I don't get any speed increase using both - believe this is due to the new software that is supposed to be released in the second quarter, which would combine the 2 ports into 1, thus doubling your speed, is still pending.

Have not yet figured out how to configure this Xincom router to force the DTA's IP to only use one of the WAN ports but not either - will keep reading and post back if I can figure this out. Have not yet called tech support.

Currently am just playing with this since my telco is giving me free ADSL service thru the end of June, and 1 month free POTS phone service, because they basically screwed up my service. Don't think I want or can afford 2 broadband connections permanently. Sure is nice for redundancy especially with VoIP, but now also get unlimited LD on POTS for $10/month, was getting 200 min. for $8/month + fees/taxes. I must keep POTS for 911 service for now. Will dump for VoIP ASAP. Have used VoIP since last July as a second line.

I was just looking through the manual of this router. Interesting!

Look under the Host IP section. It looks like you can create a static DHCP address for DTA. The DTA then would always pull the same IP from the router. When you set this up, you can set that IP/Host as strict binding and set it to one of the WAN ports.

This is just from a quick glance at the documentation. Since I can't physically play with the web interface of the router, I might be wrong.

Re: [Packet8] Dialed number will not ring 90% of the time

Digiblur,

Wow! I've been having the exact same problem for several days. I've tried switching phones and it doesn't make a difference.

I found that rebooting/resetting the DTA will temporarily fix the problem.

I've also found that being persistent and repeatedly re-dialing (with 4 letter threats thrown in) will also - eventually ... give you ring tone. The inconsisentency of getting ring tone - sometimes - vs. never getting ring tone - leads me to believe that this problem is not associated with router DHCP issues.

For the record: Linksys BEFW11S4 4 port ver 4 (Jan 2004 firmware), Patriot cable - 3M down/512K up. Packet8 firmware 12.33.

I'm suspecting packet loss here...due to your previous exp's.

Have you tried the DMZ thing? Usually this is only needed for incoming call problems.

Have you tried dialing slower or faster?

Digiblur,

I'm now behind the DMZ. I've tried dialing slow, really slow, super slow, fast, and really fast. Now I just use the redial.

Here's what's happening. I ALWAYS get dialtone. And up until the last few days I usually had no problem getting ringtone. Not sure if "ringtone" is the proper term here - by ringtone I mean the rings I hear after I dial a number.

What happens now is that I get my dialtone, dial my number and hear nothing even if I wait on the phone for several minutes (just to make sure its not a real slow delay type of thing).

My solution to this hopefully short term problem is to hangup and hit re-dial. Cycling through this pattern will eventually get me ringtone and a connection.

Once I'm connected everything is fine except for the occasional walkie-talkie effect which I attribute to latency issues - not problems with Packet8.

Re: [Packet8] Dialed number will not ring 90% of the time

I had horrible problems several days ago. I could barely get a call inbound. It wasn't even going to voicemail. I tried calling in and it took 7 fails to get 1 successful. I wasn't having outbound problems at that time.

Then, last Friday I couldn't dial out to some numbers. It just hung with no response. Other numbers were reachable. Finally, by the next day, I was able to dial into the failed number from the day before.

Packet8 actually works on DirecWay?

Tried your suggestion. Set the DTA's IP address under the Host IP section for strict binding to WAN port 2 (ADSL 3000/768), since everything I've read on this forum seems to suggest that an ADSL connection for VoIP is more stable overall than a cable connection.

Made 5 or 6 calls prior to doing this and only 1 went thru (rang). After the above change made 7 or 8 test calls and all went thru perfectly. I never even rebooted anything. Will post back if this is not a permanent fix.

Was not perfectly honest in my above previous post, I really wanted the Xincom router to get their advertised "The T1 Alternative" for under $100 per month (with 2 broadband connections). "I feel the need for speed".

The box states, "5-year Warranty with Lifetime Tech Support & Firmware updates". Some say this router is wonderful and others are saying it is the worst router they ever had. I had a true plug and play experience so far with no real problems.

Thanks again for your help!

Now I'm curious... make a few calls and try to determine by either the router or the modem's activity lights, which broadband connection it is using. I want to make sure it is using just one of the broadband connections.

What I think what was happening was.. one moment the DTA would send out its "keep alive" packet through the cable connection, then through the dsl, then the cable again, it would definately mess up the system as it would see the IP address of your DTA flipping back and forth. God only knows what's happening during a call.

Glad to be of some help!

Made a few test calls and could not tell from the router which modem was handling the call, since both WAN port lights flashed alternately whether on a call or not. The cable modem's DATA light is the only light that blinks constantly, no matter what, so cannot tell anything from that modem.

Then shut down my computer and only had the DTA on and connected to the router, then made a few test calls. The router's WAN lights still flashed alternately, but the DSL modem's WAN ACT light stayed on continuously during a call and was off when not on a call.

Since this router has Auto Fail-over, would physically disconnecting the DSL modem from the router prove anything if I could not then get an outgoing call thru?

Please let me know if you would like me to try anything else.

P.S. This router runs so cool you cannot tell it is even turned on, while my other router runs very hot (a characteristic others on the net have observed). Of course the Xincon is over twice the size of my Network Everywhere router.

Re: [Packet8] Dialed number will not ring 90% of the time

This morning I could not get even a dial tone on Packet8. Rebooting the DTA did not help, still no dial tone.

Had to leave without checking anything, but this afternoon when I got back home, P8 had dial tone and everything seemed to be working normally.

Am using the following firmware: Application Code Version: DTA version 1.0 US (8x8 001233)
Downloader Code Version: 1.0 US (8x8 010112)
