I tried your firmware and it works, but I also have the problem of the two input boxes. I tried a hardware reset and a 'restore to defaults', but that doesn't work.

@evro.net

Yes, the same phenomenon (empty input boxes)...
But you can fill the right value (84 mW ), and the unit increase the power immediately.
Channel 14 didn't work for me - goes to ch.1 (shows 14, but on my laptop I see 1) or rests on previous.

Empty boxes

Sorry ppl,
Revision 1 was 1.5 (some unfinished stuff added). I'll fix it asap.

Channels and localization

As far as I know certain wireless cards (as well as software) are localized to use only specific channels (sometimes hardcoded, sometimes "Region lock" like in DVDs). If AP shows channel 14 in status - thats what it most probably uses.

Revision 2 HERE

Sorry for the problems with revision 1.

MustDie 1.08 revision 2
1) Advanced Wireless: Fixed Tx power boxes
2) Advanced Wireless: Removed Antenna Selection box
3) Advanced Wireless: Added Transmitter Antenna box
4) Advanced Wireless: Added Receiver Antenna box
5) Status: Added Transmission Power value

Details: Apart from the obvious fixes of the problems with the Tx power boxes the firmware now allows for separate selection of the antennas for Rx and Tx (Left, Right or Diversity).

Bugs I won't be able to fix:
1) Packet counters: this data is queried from /proc/net/dev in a proper way, therefor the problem may be in a driver which I won't touch
2) SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) in the status: I have found this data for bridge mode, but could not find the IO control/utility where I can get this data for AP mode. I'll get it in if I can find it, but no promises.

As always please post your feedback. Cheers.

Re: Revision 2 HERE

Hi MustDie,
thanks a lot for your really fast feedback.
As for me it's important to know signal strength and signal to noise in bridge mode (I'm using all devices in bridge mode only).
In AP mode (or better AP client mode) you can see signal strength in AP mode while querying for your neighbourhood.
Can you try to implement it?

Hi @ all
i´m newbie and will have a question:
I will use the wap54g in near future in bridgemode to
brideging a distance from 6,5 Km with a Yagi-Antenna
on both sides.
So i was very happy as i see the power hack. But will it work in the Bridgemode?
Wich Firmware i have to use?
Background : At this very long distance i need every mW i
can get
Have also seen a power-booster with 1000mW from fiberline
but costs 299 Euro

see you

Hi Schnulli,

The Tx power settings and antenna selection should work for all modes on the AP. You should always use the latest firmware (currently MustDie 1.08 revision 2).

Hope this helps and good luck with the installation.

PS: If you use this firmware be absolutely sure that your WAP54G is version 1.0 or 1.1 and NOT 2.0 or higher!!!

Revision 2 source corrected

The forum engine couldn't digest tar.bz2 file apparently, so here is the reposted version in the zip format.

Yo mustdie,

Very nice work! It would be cool if you would use the latest available source from Linksys as your base, though (currently v2.06). This version has a lot of improvements, like bridge and client-modes, WPA PSK over WDS, etc. Especially WPA over WDS is important to me, as we all know how secure standard WEP is...

Versions of Firmware

Since people apparently don't want to read all of the posts I will reiterate:

1) Currently available GPL sources from Linksys are 1.08 and 2.06. Therefor I CANNOT integrate those hacks into 1.09 and 2.07 since no source code is available for them, even though I wish very much to do so (after all, I also use the AP and want to have the latest firmware with improvements).

2) I have a WAP54G v1.0 which is compatible with version 1.05, 1.06, 1.08 and 1.09 of the firmware, not 2.06 or 2.07. I believe that version 2.06 can be modified to run on WAP54G v1.0 and v1.1 but I have not actually tried that. In other words - I can integrate my improvements into 2.06 BUT I cannot test it for WAP54G v2.0 and I won't be comfortable releasing untested firmware.

Re: [wireless] WAP54G Firmware with Power Hack (1.08-based) HERE

@Schnulli

1) If i understand correctly you asked "How do I find what version of WAP54G I have?" There are a few methods:
a) Unplug your AP from power and network, turn it upside down, find a serial number. The version of WAP54G is written above serial number, below Linksys logo. If the writing says "WAP54G" you have version 1.0, if "WAP54G v1.1" you have 1.1 and "WAP54G v2.0" you have 2.0 (as if you couldn't figure it out yourself ).
b) A clear indication that you have 1.0 is that it has 7 lights on a front panel. If you have 3 it is whether 1.1 or 2.0. If you have 3 lights and bought more than half a year ago it is for sure version 1.1 (but its better to check the version anyway).

2) Resistor patch: I cannot recommend the resistor patch for two reasons:
a) If you damage your AP while saudering the resistor on you void your warranty automatically
b) If you install my firmware and something non-critical (e.g. the wireless card) on your WAP54G breaks you still can reflash your AP with original firmware and send it for warranty service. If you open it up (which you will for resitor patch)- they'll bounce it.

But, if you don't care about warranty you can use my firmware AND apply resistor patch (which as I understand improves the sensitivity of the receiving antenna) - it should be one baaaad AP after that.

Hey mustdie,

Upgrading a v1.0-unit to 2.07 is no problem if you follow the instructions posted by Linksys. Make sure your unit is at 1.08, then upgrade to 1.09.1 and from there to the 2.07. I'm pretty sure 2.06 won't be a problem, either. I upgraded multiple units this way and they don't seem to be suffering from the loss of wired ethernet.

BTW: These instructions are posted in the "international" section of the Linksys-site. As I'm pretty sure the European and US versions of the hardware are identical, the upgrade-procedure should apply to all v1.0 and v1.1-units out there.

See: »www.linksys.com/international/fi···&coid=28
