1 edit | [General] Earthlink DSL Upgrades
I just got off the phone with this wonderful Earthlink sales rep named Kim. I was curious to find out if Earthlink was offering any upgraded speeds for DSL since Bellsouth should have their Extreme DSL up and running by next week Monday. She told me she just got finished being briefed about the upgrades in a meeting and I was the first person to call her about it. Anyway she knew exactly what I was talking about with the upgrades and told me that earthlink will be offering the higher speeds but didn't give me an exact date( sounded like she was walking around the subject when I asked)she did say that it will be soon and that I should receive an email about it. She also said that the upgrades should be automatic for DSL customers and that the pricing will be staying the same. When I asked her about any static IP info and if we would have to sign a new contract she was unsure. She placed me on hold to find out but when she came back she politely explained she couldn't find the answer. The last thing she said was that she wasn't sure that these speed increases would be available for all Earthlink customers in all areas. She used my phone number and another number that I gave here that's in my area to find out out if i qualified but my number gave an error since I already had Earthlink DSL. The other number qualified for DSL but that might have just been basic DSL. I was wondering if anybody else could make a call to Earthlink and verify this or was she just pulling my leg. |

1 edit | I sure hope they provide an upgrade - it'll be the only thing keeping me from jumping to cable once my contract expires.
Especially given that SE has better service for the same price, EL really needs to get their speeds upgraded to stay remotely competitive. (SE has a higher upload) |

This is a response from EarthLink Electronic Support. Hello Athol,
Yes, Kim was correct that EarthLink will be releasing upgraded DSL service very soon. I am not able to provide you with the exact date, as I have not been provided with that information myself. There are other details that you have asked about that I cannot answer due to not having the information provided to me. As soon as I get the information, I will most certainly post it to dslreports.com.

Do we have to explicitly request the upgrade or will it be automatic? Also, the static IP is a real plus (currently charged by both BS and ELNK at $14.95) if it is included as well. Thanks |

| I have just contacted what is left of Broadband Installation Services in the Atlanta office. A friend there emailed the following information to me:
----- Beginning April 8th, 2004, EarthLink will offer download speeds of up to 3Mbps to eligible customers ------------------------------------------------------------ On April 8th, 2004, EarthLink will have the ability to offer download speeds of up to 3 mbps to New EarthLink High Speed subscribers. This will only be available to subscribers that are within the Covad footprint and within 10,000 feet from the CO.
The 3.0 product will provide the customer a download of up to 3 mbps at the same price as the current offering of 1.5 mbps. Upload speed remains at 128kbps. This is still a best effort service, so speeds are not guaranteed. ------------------------------------------------------------ Product Attributes: Available to New EarthLink High Speed subscribers that are in the Covad footprint and within 10,000 feet from the Central Office. Monthly fee: $49.95 Early Term Fee: $149.95 -12 month commitment Setup Fee: based on promotion offer
Due to system limitations, we will be unable to offer the 3.0 speeds to existing Covad customers at this time, but should be available later this year. If a current broadband customer calls in requesting this promotion, please advise them this is for new customers only. ------------------------------------------------------------
There you have it. Looks like existing customers are out in the cold. |

1 edit | Ok I found this on the sales site. »https://store.earthlink.net/cgi-bin/wsis···on=speed
The maximum speed you can get with EarthLink DSL is 3.0Mbps in the "downstream" direction (information coming to you, such as Web pages or downloaded files) and 128Kbps in the "upstream" direction (information you send to others, such as your outgoing emails). Most residential users need much greater "downstream" capacity than "upstream," which explains the speed difference between the two.
I find it strange they are still keeping the upload at 128. |

Sorry, I just find this hilarious... with such a low upload, more than half of that will be taken up from ACK packets alone, if you can even reach downloads that use the entire 3.0mbps in the first place. Looks like I'll be ditching EL very soon. |
