| [Services] DSL without phone number
I want to have DSL service without a phone number or local phone service. I have read that it is possible, but there isn't much on the internet discussing this option. I've read that you must a phone number to subscribe, but if you cancel your local phone service after your DSL is connected, then the DSL service will still work. Has anyone tried this or have any information about this setup? |

I can tell you unequivocally that DSL will die as soon as the phone is disconnected. I have IFITL (PCDATA) which does not use the phone carrier but a separate fiber and some prankster called in a cancellation on my telephone (POTS) service a couple of weeks ago. I noticed the lost IFITL before I got a call on the cell from a friend telling me they got a message that my phone had been disconnected.
Called customer service and BS had service restored in 10 minutes.

| reply to phlover1979 Like when the phoneline dies... do to it being left off the hook.. the dsl still works.. It would be cool if they could imply that kind of idea. They probably wont be offering Just DSL for a couple of years.. maybe 1 or two. But no doubt they will be offering VOIP with it lol! |

Nice thought BUT if you leave the phone off the hook you still have a phone line. You just won't be able to receive calls. It's NOT DEAD. -- Shooter Ready--Stand By BEEP ******** |

Conversely if a light short is present on your line that will cause an off hook condition. You will not be able to make or receive calls while the DSL may very well stay working.
Splitpair -- If you can't fix it with a buttset and some beanies you ain't a technician. |

It doesn't work that way. This question has been asked, and answered, SO many times it's unbelievable. The simple answer is NO you can not get DSL without having PHONE LINE/SERVICE. -- Shooter Ready--Stand By BEEP ******** |

The main feature of ADSL is LINE SHARING!
If you want a dry pair, I'm sure Bellsouth will set you up with a nice T1 for a price. |

| Like everyone said it doesn't work. I know for a fact. We had two lines in our house and one was for the DSL, we finally got rid of the DSL line and just switched it over the main line since it wasn't worth paying extra for the 2nd line. As soon as their was no dial tone, the DSL unsynced and wouldn't sync back up until it was plugged into the other phone line. |

| It would work. However there are better technologies out there that are specifically for dry pairs. ADSL is a solution for line sharing and asymmetrical speed.
If you don't like that, Comcast will gladly charge you 57/month for internet ONLY (10.00 fee for privilige of having your cable connected at the tap--yet you aren't getting anything for the fee.) At least with ADSL I'm getting a reliable phone service. |

  Naked DSL

| reply to phlover1979 Hey guys, this IS possible...but it's not in the telco's best interest, so it's obviously rare (why charge less for something that's more work?) Qwest, however, is doing this in response to a drop in DSL customers who want to lose their landline for a cellular phone. They're offering "naked DSL", DSL with no phone line, to at least keep part of the cash from people cancelling landlines. Check it out:

Of course, they also recently posted a $307M loss, so... |

Yes, we know it's possible, no question there. The question is, can you get it? No. said by Naked DSL: Qwest, however, is doing this in response to a drop in DSL customers who want to lose their landline for a cellular phone. Great, I checked it out. The only thing Qwest offers in the Bellsouth service area is a long distance plan. -- i'd like to thank you for everything, primarily your glass house #dslr | listen-to | Shield fans! |
