| reply to Optimized Re: [PLC] Anyone using Broadband-Over-Powerlines?
Current technologies manufacturers and design BPL gear. That is mostly used for data and more importantly AMR - automatic meter reading. TXU in TX is planning a large deployment I hear. Download and up load varies depending on the loss budget, over subscription rate, network equipment and typology. I have been hesitant about recommending BPL until I researched Current's gear. Check it out and good luck. Are you looking to deploy this, because I work for a turnkey co. that focuses on the Utility market. |

| reply to Optimized Does anyone know of any power line Internet providers that provide service around Cambridge, NY? Right now, I live in an area where I'm about two miles out of the coverage range for DSL, cable, and wireless. So I'm wondering if broadband over powerlines would be a good option for broadband in rural areas over sattelite Internet. |

| reply to Optimized Well I just got off the phone with Direct TV (it was 50min of pain) - 5 "guys" later I start talking to them about my questions. Bottom line Direct TV has an offer called "high speed internet by power line" if you live in the Dallas Fort Worth Area (I am in Dallas) my understanding is you can get it. I was told there is a 1.5, 3.0, 5.0 and 8.0 Mbps - I was told this is both ways up and down! So I got the 5 meg service for 29.99/mo - they had NO other details for me, a spare modem was 45.00 - but not sure if you could use them at the same time etc. Didn't know if they support POP or IMAP for mail. So in about a week I'll be using it - will report back. The powerline modem was "free" but they whacked with me a 21.00 "service" "delivery" charge. Details to follow. |

| reply to Optimized Well I just switched over to High Speed Internet from DirectTV - it is from power line. The initial speed results are NO way even NEAR the 5Meg service I have paid for! I'll have to monitor it for a few days and report back - I would say the setup was very very easy there is nothing to configure on the modem - I just plugged it into my wall AC outlet and I was on the air. You can see photos of what is in the box at:

getting about 1 meg up and 1 meg down in the gallery see the gallery for more info. More details to follow. |

| reply to Optimized So after multiple calls to the direct-TV support desk - they had my connection set at 1.5Megs NOT the 5Megs I had ordered. I am now getting very close to those speeds and thus far very happy with the service and speeds - it will be to bad if they kill this service off - having the Internet in ANY AC outlet in my house is very handy! |

| reply to Optimized Hello, I've not any reports on this BPL service, only questions. 1. Has this proved out to be a viable service =)? 2. In which direction should I point the local PUD to get this going if it has proved out to be a viable technology, as the local PUD has been switching out the old meters for the new digital meter readerless meters for some time now.
My only higher speed option to date is satellite and that is way better than dial-up at 28,000 bps (on a good day), but with the latency, slow uploads, and price, it leaves a great amount to be desired.
Thank you -- Without a runoff vote after the general election we will FOREVER be RULED by Pachyderms and Jackasses, and they'll make sure it stays that way! ez |
