I bet a lot of people think this is handy.
Personally, I never/rarely log out, and therefore never/rarely log in, so this won't have much effect.
Was there really a need?

I would not necessarily call it a need, more like a site face lift or enhancement. I like it and it doesn't hurt anyone ... you can still go to the home page if you choose. It may help those that are just logging in briefly to see IM's or the other notables one click faster.
Justin will likely forever have a "To Do" list of enhancements that he will work on as his time permits. As he completes one, two new ones probably make the list. Just watch out when he is drinking lots of coffee.

I never log out
knowing me, it would be 3 or 4 months from now and i'll be asking "is this new?"
I dont understand why that logo on the logon is different from the logo at the top of th site
