I guess what I'd be curious about, are other states doing that much better? I know California is, though they have their own problems....
But I've often wondered how much of upstate NY's problems are simply weather related. The center of the state is like a cloud vacuum, there's two week stretches where the people there don't see the sun......
Makes it difficult to attract new industry looking for communities to build around....
What's funny is that in the 40's Binghamton was a massive boom-town, and quite the gambling, social mecca..... |

The southern Tier of NY has been dead since then. I grew up in Elmira and live in Buffalo- The reason why upstate is in the economic condition it's in is because we get taxed to death. That's 99% of the problem, the other 1% is the government mismanagement and waste of the collected taxes... The people who can afford it get an education and go south, coming back to upstate to see family and friends. The people who stay settle for low paying jobs and 80% are alcoholics because there isn't much else to do..
There are plenty of bars to go to though, of course now they are all failing because the MORONIC government banned smoking in all bars.. Now the people they think they are protecting cannot afford to eat..
Amazing how bad an idiotic bunch of Democrats can mess up a state. New York City should be disconnected from upstate and take of their own problems and become it's own state too- then a huge problem would be lifted off upstate... Then maybe we could get some Republicans in office and get some tax relief and economic growth. Then maybe it would be worth it for businesses of all kinds to come back to upstate, including telecommunication companies. Then Adelphia would be kicked out and not allowed to do business in the state like should have happened before, instead of NY bailing them out and making the taxpayers pay for their 6 billion dollar thievery.

I agree on the concept of more isolation of NYC from the rest of the state.....
