| Your IP may appear static... ...but if they said it's dynamic, it probably is. Usually with a dynamic IP address (when you're not using PPPoE), that means your IP address can change, but most likely won't for a while. I know people with dynamic IP addresses that have had 2 different IP addresses in 3 YEARS. | |

| Its really both You IP is both static and dynamic for Lightning Link. You are assigned a static IP (try a release all, and then renew all). But when you reach Ligtning Link dashboard you are dynamicly re-allocated for web use. I hope this clears up your confusion. -- I may grow old, but I'll never grow up! | |

| Re: Its really both Hmm...I don't know about that. I was unable to find a TOS for lightning link to check on that. I do know that the only time that his IP will change is if there is a network upgrade and the CO that he operates out of gets move to a new router (I work in tech support for Lightning Link, so I know). I think that changing the IP otherwise is a violation (don't quote me I'm not 100 % sure)of the TOS. -- I may grow old, but I'll never grow up! | |

 | | Anon | what's w/ these games they play with your ip?! i've been running cable (roadrunner) for a few years now and just added dsl as well. you cannot see the machine from the outside die to them running a NAT on their end. they ensured me before signing up i could do such things. i know i can no longer access my machine from the office as is. what does this do for things such as gaming? or irc? any ideas? | |

| Re: Its really both Yea that NAT thing bugs me too. It doesn't seem to affect my Quake playing or using Yahoo Messenger (I don't use ICQ). I think the only trouble I have had is using netmeeting with another Lightning Link user. I wasn't able to connect using the IP address his winipcfg reports, but I had to use the IP address it was NATed to. I found this by having him telnet into frontiernet.net, log in and type "who". His NATed address was listed to the right of his user name.
Are you trying to access your machine from the office using a VPN or some other application? | |
