I was horrified to learn today that my $49 a month is now going to be $70 a month! So, after a year of blissful service, I will have to search for another ISP.
Too bad, but it was nice while it lasted!

| Re: Surprise at renewal time! I had the same experience. Great service for one year - I can't remember any down time at all. I thought I would be able to renew my service contract, but they told me the rates were going up and tried to talk me into a two year pre-paid plan! To make things worse, they waited until I had one week of service left to tell me this. I had to scramble to find another provider and I'm now without DSL. | |

| Re: Surprise at renewal time! I'm signing up with DSLi, but I'm playing the waiting game now. Apparently the whole connection process has to start over and I have to buy another modem (I can't believe it has to be this way, but I'm at their mercy). It's been almost three weeks now and I have heard nothing about my line. If it does happen though, I will have 784/384 for $50/month. | |

| Be VERY careful switching away from CapuNet! They will do anything the can to penalize you for getting away. I am just finishing up a horrific battle with them. After they informed me about the rate hike, I requested an ISP switch to Speakeasy.net, and it took about 5 days. Unfortunately, in the meantime CapuNet had convinced me I had to immediately renew month-to-month or risk losing my service. DON'T fall for this. They told me I had to sign something right away because my current contract was up. I believed them (I later found out that since my old contract term had already ended without them contacting me, it had automatically renewed, and CapuNet was actually required to give ME 60 days notice before breaking the contract). The Terms and Conditions of the new contract they rushed me to sign included the following gems:
- $300 "early termination fee" (the value of my entire contract is $119). And they honestly threatened to charge me the fee if I requested a termination date that was not the last day of the month!!!
- "All equipment must be returned to CapuNet within 10 days upon termination of service" or you pay $250 "replacement" fee. They insist that this is binding on me, even though I paid $249 + SALES TAX for my modem when I signed up, and the original contract said nothing about leasing the equipment. Yes that's right, they have added language to a new T&C forcing you to give back what you originally paid them for.
Whatever you do, DON'T sign the new Terms and Conditions...you can probably get switched over to a new ISP long before they can legally cut you off. My ISP switch went through the day after I signed.

| Re: Surprise at renewal time! Thanks for the info. Funny thing is Capunet has not even contacted me about renewal since the one very polite call. If they had been in the ballpark pricewise I would have re-upped, say $65 a month.
It is hard to believe that they would get heavy on the contract, especially concerning renewals. If you think about it, it is the consumer who needs protection nowadays with providers disappearing! Even so, it wouldn't have bothered me that much to have renewed yearly with a prepay of around $700.

| Well, my contract will be up at the end of this month, and I haven't heard a peep from CapuNet about a rate hike. My contract says: Following the completion of the Initial Term and any renewal term(s), this agreement shall automatically renew annually unless either party provides the other with 60 days advance written notice of its intent not to renew. And farther down it says: We guarantee not to raise your rates beyond our normal current [my emphasis added] discount rates after your first year of service. So here's how I read this: because they have failed to notify me 60 days prior to the end of my contract that they intend to terminate (or substantially change the terms of) the contract, it should automatically renew. And since the rate agreed to in the contract is $69/month, it should renew at that rate (a rate change would require negotiation of a new contract). And if they try to raise the rate without giving me the agreed upon 60 days advance notice, they are in violation of the contract. Am I interpreting this correctly? And what does "current discount rates" mean? Current at the time the contract expires? Or current at the time I signed the contract? It seems at the very least I should be able to switch providers when the contract expires without incurring any penalty. I suppose I could beat them up for 2 more months of service at the $69 rate, but that seems pointless. I think I'll just transfer to ToadNet. That's a local company who had my dial-up business before I got DSL. I really wanted to go with them, but at the time their DSL price just wasn't competitive. I've been very happy with CapuNet's DSL service, but this price thing is not good. **sigh**

| Screw the contract! Dude, Capunet tried to automatically renew me at the old rate and even charged my credit card for a year of service, which I would have accepted ($650 a year). But then it was all off, and I had to pay closer to a grand.
Capunet net knows absolutely nothing about sales, or they would have tried to make a compromise.
You will see! Later, they issued me a credit and cut me. End of story.
