| Speed differences... I too have RR and love it. The differences in connect speed we see with other road runner customers can be attributed to so many factors. The coax it self plays a major role. Not the coax running from the wall to the modem but the coax that runs underground or on the poles. 1200 down and 700 up! That's pretty good. I average 1800 down and 360 up. My main concern is that Im able to maintain a down rate no less than 1mbit and the connection is RELIABLE. So far so good. | |

Try a registery tweak. I was getting 600 down and 930 up and after the registery tweak i'm consistantly getting 3500 down and 950 up. www.speedguide.net has registery patches.

| Anon | I am not a big fan of cable but......
I just may have to give it a try due to a lot of "great" speeds reported here. I know my signature says something different but I will at least try it for 30 days and see if I decide to get rid of DSL. At this point, I can see the only major drawbacks to cable are no Static IP option and many of my "computer savvy" neighbors getting cable modem (instant slowdown?).
Also, if I ever decide to run a server from home, I can't do it on Cable modem. If these little quirks are worked around, then my signature will change to "DSL Internet - Feel close to your provider by long holds for customer service and constantly being passed around. Dontcha just love it?" - Endorsed by Verizon OffLine and EarthStinks. | Re: I am not a big fan of cable but...... I just made the change to RR. I was a PacBell DSL customer(not a bad ISP, I had to give up broadband for a while and when I returned, PacBell only offered dynamic IPs), then I tried Telocity (pure hell. I don't advise anybody to use them). I was just like you, against cable all together and didn't want anything to do with it. So, left with no options I tried RR. The first plus was, I got installed in only 6 days, secondly as soon as the installation was complete I was getting speeds of 1600-down/300-up. After I did some tweakin', I was breaking the 2Mb barrier!! That's not bad considering with DSL I couldn't even get the 1600 downstream that I originally got with RR. I have never seen speeds under 1.3Mb. I've only been down one time, but the rest of the time has been fast and consistent. I have one more option that I've been itchin' to try and that's Sprint ION. Sprint offers a line speed up to 8Mb/1Mb over ADSL. I just ordered it and this will be the determining factor in my decision to keep RR or go with DSL. In any case you won't go wrong with RR. Give it a try.

This is definitely the best response that I have received so far. I apologize to you if I am sounding like a college professor (Doh!) but this is an outstanding respone. That is definitely the bottom line. It really does matter what area you are in. People complain all the time about Verizon in NYC but I have had a great connection so far. Also, people have complained about Road Runner. I know a couple of people who said nothing but spectacular things about it.
You have inspired me to write a new signature. See below. Thanks. -- "At first, I wasn't receptive to Cable Internet. However, I must give it a try due to the excellent reviews it has been receiving. Only fair to try it before I knock it." - Tramar, current Verizon OnLine user, eagerly waiting for Road Runner's arrival.
