You've got options

It looks like CapuNet has now dropped their residential (RADSL) offerings and is only installing SDSL lines now. I don't know if that means they won't give you the option to renew when your contract it up or not (I would think they should as long as the CO equipment is still in place). Even if they do, prices may be higher now.

If you're not satisfied with CapuNet, you could check out other regional ISPs, like Atlantech and ToadNet. Speakeasy is also supposed to be pretty good for a National ISP (and slightly cheaper than local ISPs), but they seem to be swamped now with users fleeing the dead/dying ISPs. If I were you, I'd pay the few extra bucks for a good local ISP that isn't overloaded and won't go out of business next month.

It seems that CapuNet's business lines now cost more, too. My company got a 384k SDSL line last fall from CapuNet and we have been very happy with it. But the monthly cost on their web site now is $60 higher than our current 1-year contract (but only $40 higher/month for prepayment). But all the other ISPs have raised their prices similarly. The cost of broadband is going up...

I just wish I could get ANYTHING in Germantown. $100/month for IDSL is beginning to look attractive.

You don't have OPTIONS!

It is already too late for you to switch. Might as well bite the bullet and take it like a man. Grab ankles now!

Re: You don't have OPTIONS!

You were wrong, I did have options. I chose between Speakeasy and a negotiated rate offered me by CapuNet.

Re: You've got options

I just received my residential renewal from Capunet, and what a shock. Last year the rate was $49/mo with one month free when you paid by the year ($539/yr). It's now $71.57/mo and year is $858.84. And that's only for 384/128. Both Earthlink and Speakeasy offer $49/mo for 608/128. I don't think the static IP is worth the added $320. I'm looking around before I renew.

Keep working with them....

I was in the same boat, and stayed. See the rest of my review. I got in for $618, so it's still an increase, but not bad at all.

Heh heh! Good luck.

You're obviously on a Verizon circuit rather than Covad, which may change things, but keep your eyes wide open when renewal time comes up. Two things in particular:

1) Dig out the terms and conditions (T&C) of your old contract, so if they tell you you must re-sign quickly you can tell them you have 60 days after they give you notice of their price hike.

2) Read the T&C of the new contract very carefully before you sign. You will likely find such gems as a $300 early termination fee, and a clause requiring you to give back your equipment when you terminate service, EVEN if you think you bought it! Oh yeah, and they told me the $300 fee applies even on a $119 month-to-month contract, such that I'd be charged $300 for terminating service on, say, March 17th instead of the last day of the month.

Good luck.

Re: Heh heh! Good luck.

I went through a lot of discussion with CapuNet during renewal. The T&C are confusing to say the least. However, they assured me in writing that the $300 cancellation fees do not apply after you've met your first year of service. And when renewing, you've probably met that 1 year minimum commitment if you are on an annual contract. This is because the DSL CLEC charges them the $300 if a customer cancels in the 1st 12 months. Anyway, in the second year, if you cancel, there may be a $100 early termination fee for the current contract period. And if you move your DSL line to another ISP, there will probably be a fee as well, but not a CLEC cancellation fee. An yes... you paid for the DSL modem, but you do not have to return it after the end of the 2nd year. Its yours.

Capunet will renew RADSL customers

I recently renewed my residential ADSL service for one more year with Capunet. I was a 1.5/384 Telesurfer Pro user. While they do not offer this service anymore for new subscribers, they were more than happy to renew me at the new $89 / month rate which is for their 784K service. However, it made no sense for them to screw around with my Covad circuit which has been rock solid for the last year, so I retained my 1.5 megabit service.

I too am disappointed about the $10/month increase in price, but I'd rather pay $89 a month for superb service than switch to Verizon. I'd give Cox/Roadrunner a try if only they'd get internet service onto my Cable line. I've been waiting for 3 years, but no luck.
