| Re: Sounds GooD.... Well, Telocity was the darling for $50 DSL, with an emphasis on the word was.
I switched to Telocity from Bellsouth and it was a huge improvement, but it just didn't last. They grew too big, too fast, and that resulted in monthly major problems that always last a week.
I hope you'll be happy on Bellsouth. But for me there was no way to go back to them. I need static IP, and a real 24/7 service with an Acceptable Use Policy that lets me accomplish more than just net surfing. That's just not possible on a PPP dynamic IP connection that Bell is selling now. But if PPP works for you, then fine. [text was edited by author 2001-04-20 22:17:45]

| Re: Sounds GooD.... I don't understand your question.
If you want to run your own DNS server, you just get the code and run it.
Giant said they would run a slave for me, but I just haven't gotten around to setting that up with them yet. Since I have 5 IPs, I'm currently running my own master and slave anyway. Having more slaves is better though.

| Giant Improvement Grayson,
i noticed you switched from Telloff city !
How is the Giant coming along?? I have Telo and At&t cable modem as a back up. it would be cheaper to just have Giant, but are they worth it? Let me know as I have customers paying for hosting and need something that always works.

Yes, I cut over to Giant on April 18th.
100% uptime with no problems whatsoever. The switch-over took six days with only a few hours of downtime.
Giant gets my highest possible recommendation.

Any suggestions for a router for 5-8 IPs.
the linksys probably won't do anymore.

I'm running an Efficient 5660 here. I believe the Alcatel Speed Touch Pro and the Cayman are also supported. But it would be best to ask them about this when you order.
Matt or Bill would have those answers. Jennifer will probably be the one taking your order and doing the provisioning and might know too.
All very nice and helpful people. Say hello for me.
Not sure what type of service you are really interested in though. They have bridged with one public IP that you can run any type of ethernet router behind like the Linky. I don't think they actually support it though but it will work.
The other class of service is RFC 1483 routed. You'll need a real router like those above to use that. You get 5 public IPs with that service so you don't need to do any NAT at all unless you want to.

| Re: Giant Improvement Cayman can be a regular router, the problem comes with the non-assignment of an WAN ip subnet that is different than the internal IP's subnet - many only get the 5 ip's given to them for the LAN and WAN both. This cannot be routed when you are using the IP's of the same subnet on the WAN and LAN interfaces, thus the creation and wide use of the NAT function. If you still want NAT in a "pooled" form that will use all of the IP's as needed you will need to get an Cisco or other router that has the pooling feature that is not found on boxes like 2Wire, Linksys, and Cayman. | |

| Re: Giant Improvement RFC 1483 routing isn't done the way you describe the problem. And in fact you can't have two interfaces on any device that are on the same network no matter what you are trying to do.
The Linksys isn't really a true router anyway. It does what it does via NAT and doesn't understand RFC 1483 routing. In fact, the bridge you have to use ahead of a Linksys won't pass RFC 1483 routing protocol at all.
For the service I'm on, the WAN is a /30 and the LAN is a /29, and they are on different networks because they have to be.
