what was the ping to the first hop?

What was the ping to the first hop? What are some sample pings to big internet sites from GalaxyDSL? How good is it for gaming?

The first hop ping is not less than 55 msec. It typically varies from 55 msec to 96 msec.

GalaxyDSL seems pretty well connected. Pings to Boston University through New York add a few milliseconds at most. Pings this morning to www.zone.com and www.sega.net are right around 150 msec total (approx. first hop + 85 msec), but this would appear to be due to slow hops from the East Coast to the West Coast. Pings to www.bbc.co.uk are only adding about 20 msec. Ditto for necnews.com (New England Cable News, a local broadband site).

Ping stability is much better than with my previous providers. Pings rarely vary by more than 50 msec over a period of a few minutes. (I've had providers where pings varied from 80 msec to 1000 msec.)

I have not been doing a lot of gaming lately, so I couldn't really evaluate that. Has anyone done a good deal of gaming through GalaxyDSL?

I should qualify my first hop comment by stating that my first hop ping was large with Flashcom as well. Perhaps it has to do with my local loop length or line quality. Does anyone know why this would be?

Gadzooks. My posting got zapped.

Here's a summary. I'm not going to try to rewrite my previous reply.

All of these are approximate:

First hop: 55 - 96 ms
cns.bu.edu (my department's webserver): +2 ms (in addition to the first hop)
www.necnews.com (local broadband site): +20 ms
www.bbc.co.uk: + 20 ms
www.zone.com: + 85 ms
www.sega.net: + 85 ms
play.yahoo.com: + 150 ms

GalaxyDSL seems pretty well connected with East Coast backbones; it would seem that most of the lag with zone.com and sega.net is due to the East Coast - West Coast link. I verified this with a traceroute: Boston to Seattle via Level3 was a 50-120 ms hop to zone.com, and New York-Illinois-San Francisco via att.net added similar delays to sega.net.

These timings were all done just now at approximately 6 AM. The first hop ping is pretty stable; the other delays are of course subject to network congestion.

Apparently, the first post did not get zapped after all.
