Sounds good

I disagree, it depends on how far you are from the CO and who your ISP/CLEC are.

* Have a consistent 700kbps to 800kbps Upload 249 kbps Download

I think you have that backwards, at least I hope so.

* Small minus, I can see other computers on the network under Network Neighborhood.
Change your "Workgroup" name to something other than Workgroup and that will go away. Unless of coarse someone else has the same name as you chose.

Re: Sounds good

I am wondering what part of Illinois do you live in? I am interested in the idea of fast internet access have currently two broadband options in Kenwood/Hyde Park Chicago area, which are DSL from Ameritech or cable from 21st Century. What are some of the requirements for cable internet access?

And about the modem, does 21stcentury supply you with it, and can you buy one from 21stcentury instead of paying the extra monthly fee?

Thanks for the help

Re: Sounds good

sorry no clue, before today, i didn't know 21st century provided cable... but I would try cable first if u live in a small neighborhood, ask about the caps and stuff and the pricing, u should always be informed.

I've had Ameritech DSL and EL/MS with COVAD and I've always had to Dial In when I wanted Net access. Yes, I could've purchased a router, but didn't feel the need or have the finances at the time.

I fixed the Upload/Download stats.. thanks

Thanks,

Sorry, ADSL technology requires a dial-in to the DSLAM. Your distance from the CO has no barring on your requirement to dial-in to the CO.

Don't be sorry the quote I was replying to was.

I didn't see any "A" in front of DSL did you?
And the distance from the CO "Sometimes" dictates what flavor of DSL you may receive. No?

The distance does determine the type of DSL - I was using ADSL as an example.

Dial-In (PPPoE) is a pretty standard with Consumer and most business xDSL accounts.

This is done because several ISPs share the same DSLAM at the CO, therefore in order to access your correct server/ATM/Frame network, you will need to tell the DSLAM who you are.

The only exception is with some heavy business accounts where the DSL company owns it's own DSLAM at the switch - Those accounts usually run a lot more a month.

I have been dealing with the installs of this type of service for several years now, and it does not look like they are going to change this any time soon...

Believe it or not, I also have RCN, and I consistently get much better upload than download scores on the speed tests here. Perhaps it's a sign that they don't have their rates tuned very well, or maybe there just aren't very many people in my neighborhood connected?
