| Don't hold your breath After having DSL in Nashua since Christmas,I'm dumping it. While initially I was satisfied with it, what were occasional momentary losses of connection have grown into extended (5 minutes or better) loss of service happening many times per day. I recently calculated that out of an 8 hour period, I had no service for a total of about 2.5 hours. That means 25% of the time I had no service. Machine reboots and various other remedies have no effect. The problem is clearly with Verizon's network in this area. And it happens every day. Never mind that fact that I brought what was supposed to be a dead modem back to life only to find out someone moved my wires at the CO and I still had no connection. Took a week to fix that.
I'm glad you have a good connection so far, and I hope it stays that way, but don't hold your breath. With the deal the local ATT office is offering, I'm going to cable.

| Verizon Sucks!
Well folks. It's finally done. I signed up with Verizon DSL in April of this year. Canceled it by May. My line was finally released two days ago on 8-02-01. Now that's service. NOT!! I cannot believe it takes three months to release a DSL line from residential service. I expressed, on my many phone calls to their "Customer Service", my concern and dissatisfaction. "I'm sorry to hear that sir" was always the answer.
VERIZON SUCKS!!!!!!!
I have since signed up with Earthlink. We shall see what roads I'll travel with this one, as I have yet to get the hardware . More later.

| Hint: how to save or print screen shots
said by TSchmidt: The only annoyance is Netscape runs in a small window, that cannot be expanded and the Verizon stuff has to be scrolled horizontally and vertically. When everything is complete a screen with all your account info is displayed, this cannot be copied or printed. I used a digital camera to capture the info, plus wrote it all down.
You can always do a screen capture and paste the image into a document... for instance, into Microsoft Word. Hitting CTRL and PRINT SCREEN puts a screen shot of the entire desktop into the Windows clipboard; hitting ALT and PRINT SCREEN just gives you the currently active window. Then open a Word document and select paste (SHIFT INSERT). You can print this or save it -- you can even intersperse your own text with the screen shots.

| verizion dsl hey i just got verizon dsl. a few days after i called in my order the equipment came and i put on those phone filters. i decided to hook it up ahead of time and found out it was working so i called and pretended i lost my registration number so whoever was working there gave me it early. at first i was pissed cause i couldnt share the connection because logging on dsl actualyl prevents access to my home network. fianlyl it worked after lots of long waits and calls to ignorant tech support folk (the guy told me that as long as my dsl was working he couldnt help me with my network and pretty much hung up on me), by just sticking the dsl into my hub and loggin on seperately with both computers. after tweaking i went from 199/112 to like 727/112 which is swell. still, i cant access the file sharing of my network, but i can just sign off dsl if i really need somehting. anyways, i just wanted to say if your thinking about buying dsl you should try to hold out for a better deal than the one they offer. i originally cancelled order cause cable seemed better, but they said theyd give me two months free cancel at any time. shrug. dsl rocks. verizion tech support is a bunch of idiots. | |

| Good connection (100K/second) for 2.5 mi from CO
Ordered: 10/14/2002 Kit arrived: approx. 10/17/2002 Initial install date: 10/21/2002 Final activation date: 10/23/2002
I'm happy with the service. I'm getting 100K per second reliably, which I'm sure could be faster, but we're 2.5 miles from the CO. In any case, it's a ton faster than my dial-up, and it's actually faster than my T1 connection at work! I'm not complaining.
They ran into a problem on 10/21, so they originally said my activation date would be pushed back to 10/28. But I got an e-mail from them on 10/23 saying it was live, and indeed it was.
Just gotta do the firewall thing -- checking the XP "firewall" option for the Verizon network connection automatically disconnects me, so I'm not sure what's up with that.
I also tried installing a Cisco VPN client that my company uses (just for me to . When that is activated things go dog slow, with constant long delays. I can do without since I won't be there much longer anyway.
Overall I'm pleased with it.

Compared with my other option, Adelphia Powerstink, DSL is a godsend.
733/136 and I'm about 11800 from CO. Pretty good speeds although I may spend the extra 10.00 to get 1.5...not sure yet if I would be near my max d/l speed like I am now.

| Block port 80 and Can't host any type of server??
Have you all verizon subscribers noticed that you can't host any type of servers???
""You may not use the DSL Service to host any type of server personal or commercial in nature. ""
they block port 80. So, if you use other ports as your will you be caught?
One of the posters said he hosted his own domain on smtp server.... hmmm, is it a violation??? [text was edited by author 2003-06-09 18:01:04]

| Re: Block port 80 and Can't host any type of server?? This rule is unenforceable. If you run Windows, you are probably running any number of services that violate this rule.
It is also a violation of the first amendment. You can listen, but you cannot speak. It follows a very disconcerting trend to try to classify internet users as "producers" or "consumers", where "producers" have heightened status, and the rest of us have no voice.
It is also a violation of privacy to block port 80. The port is owned by you, and the OS that routes the packets using the port information is owned by you. Everything to the left of the 64 bit IP address refers to routing internal to your computer. It would be akin to the USPS instituting a policy to trash all your mail if the address is augmented with "Suite 80".

| God you're dumb Point 1: The reason Verizon or any other provider blocks port 80 is so they can sell you a "business class" service that costs more money. They're doing it for profit, not to be dicks. They don't care if you're running a webserver on port 4450 for your 3L33T gang, they just want to give people who want to run real servers a reason to pay them more money.
Point 2: Blocking the port on THIER network is not a violation of the first amendment, just like charging for long distance is not a violation of the first amendment. You don't have to take my word for it. I would love to see you try to argue it in front of a real Judge.
Point 3: Lastly, It isn't a violation of privacy as blocking a port does nothing to collect information about you.

| Confused? On the date 07/16/01 in your review you mentioned the following: "I decided to use a POTS/DSL splitter rather then microfilters. Performance is better and it eliminates the effects of inside wiring."
On the date 08/06/03 in your review you stated this: "...Lesson learned: always check inside wiring first. This would have saved [me from] being on dialup for several days and a service call from Verizon."
If, as you stated in 2001, that you used a "home run" is true how can inside wiring cause problems for you in 2003, unless you removed the "home run?"

The splitter does not totally isolate phone from DSL. Corrosion unbalanced phone line. This was not severe enough to interfere with voice but shut down DSL.
