Charter is exceptional service for the price!

I have had Charter Pipeline for over a year now. My speeds range from 400-512KB/sec as advertised. The install went very smoothly and outages are few and far between. When an outage does occur, it lasts for less than an hour. I have the Digital Leadership Package which includes basic, expanded basic, and digital channels. All for $100/month. The service is worth every penny. Oh, and no, I do NOT work for Charter Communications, but I wish I did instead of Paul Allen's "other" cable company.

Re: Charter is exceptional service for the price!

I have Charter Pipeline in MA also. I've had it for eight months. For most of that time, service has been excellent.

HOWEVER...

When there are problems, response is terrible. Local support knows very little, quickly passes it to level 2 (HSAcorp in Louisville). And about all they can do is issue a ticket number, and say they'll pass it back to local level for resolution.

They recently reconfigured the network (new range of IP addresses, I think in conjunction with switching from T3 to OC12), and began offering additional speeds (1mbit, 1.5 mbit, in addition to 512). For about two weeks, there were frequent address changes, and frequent periods where nothing worked. DNS was screwed up, many people were down, and nothing was being done.

They seem to have turned the corner in the last few days, and things are getting back to normal, but I'm left with major doubts about technical competence up and down the line.

If there were a competitive alternative, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

Re: Charter is the best (if no alternative)

I've been a Charter customer for about the same amount of time here in Pepperell MA. I agree that there has been very little TOTAL downtime, but there is almost always something wrong: email down, transparent proxys hosed, dns shaky, oversold bandwidth, router config problems, etc, etc... It's always something... tech "support" is the worst of the worst (there's a definite race to the bottom here though). Problems go on and on before being fixed. Each problem "resolution" seems to be associated with an equal and opposite development - thus maintaining a consistent pall over Charter's service.

Overall, it's livable - IF you don't have any options.

Thanks...

..for your current review, Scott.
Glad you're getting 5/512 where you live. Here in "The Federation Outpost"(I.E. San Luis Obispo, CA), we're still plugg'in along @ 3/256. And we've not been offered ANY better service since 01/2004. Like you said-some areas are better than others, but..liv'in in SLOtown beats liv'in in LA-ANYDAY!!!-or where you live, as a matter of fact.
Can KEEP that snow, black ice, etc.. Supposed to be in the '70's this weekend here-bummer, eh?
Guess I'll hit the beach vs being on line.

Re: Thanks...

You can keep the fires, earthquakes, riots, floods, droughts and El Nino storms. I'll take a few inches of snow. I've lived here all my life, I can drive in it.
