Seems pretty useless without a static IP.

Gentlemen,

I have updated our site to reflect the inclusion of static IPs in our business accounts.

Damn...

Outrageous cost $199 a month? Jeeze, I think I could get a T-1 for that-at least a fractional one. If you wanted to pay that much, you could have gone with either the above or the top drawer DSL or SDSL offered by a number of outfits with GUARANTEED speeds.
Is yours the little white square shaped antenna on the tall poles I have been seeing around town lately? What kind of latencies/pings do you get?

Re: Damn...

If Gatespeed can guarantee their network uptime, and if they allow servers, then it might be worth it in areas or situations where a comparable SDSL connection is either unavailable or unreliable. But even then, I don't see it being much better than the alternatives, especially for the price.

I wouldn't want it if the only way you can hook into the hardware is via USB. That sounds evil.

Ha! I do have one of those little white antenna's on my roof, but that's from Sprint. Sprint had fairly large pings. It was pretty laggy. Turns out, that when the network gets congested, they put packets in a queue. I'm not sure how Gatespeed works, but haven't noticed any latency at all. After Sprint I wasn't too excited about doing wireless again, but I don't have access to DSL at my house. (Except 128X128 through megapath)

Our prices are in line or better than other wireless or wired providers in the area.

We're trying to change the equipment code. All you need is to be able to interface with cat-5.

Re: Damn...

Too high, old buddy. If you want to compete with DSL, you have to be competitively priced.

Now you know why wireless hasn't caught on all that well for ISP access.

hmm

256 Kb/s link is $99/month*
512 Kb/s link is $199/month*
1 Mb/s link is $299/month*

Ouch!

In October 2000 the company
launched service through a wireless point-of-presence in the heart of downtown
San Jose, CA and at the South Bay Tower building at the Southwest side of San
Jose. From these locations, the company is currently providing wireless Internet
access to business customers at speeds ranging from 256 Kilobits per second
("Kbps") to 155 Megabits per second ("Mbps").

Doesn't look like they are going to offer residential service any time soon. smj have you called them?

I bet you're not getting 3MBIT *up* unless of course you're one of those lucky few OOL users.

If I just wanted fast download, I could go through any other broadband in the bay area. It's not uncommon to see speeds of 3mbps. Like dvd said, it's all about the up speed.

Horrible gatespeed TOS!

Gatespeed.com TOS says:

1. If you are over 30 days late in payment you will be fined $1,000.00 and will also have to prepay 6 months of service to be hooked up again.

2. All equipment is sold or otherwise provided to Customer AS IS and WITHOUT WARRANTY of any kind.

3. Customer will maintain records of the location of each item of financed Equipment and, if requested, will provide copies of those records to the Collateral Agent or the Administrative Agent. Customer will permit representatives of the Collateral Agent and the Administrative Agent to inspect the Financed Equipment, all related records (and make copies) and the promises upon which Financed Equipment is located and to share that information any Lender and its representatives.

4. Customer shall have all non-Gatespeed Broadband equipment or software available and operable for use with the Data Services or CPE at least five (5) business days prior to the scheduled installation date of the Data Services or CPE.

WOW!
I can't see how they can survive with that kind of TOS.
I would never agree to such crap!

sla's

Didn't see any mentions of SLA's on their site. You can get credit for outages tho in order to get them they must be requested in WRITING. what a scam

No complaints

Yes, they are a little more expensive. But when you consider the alternatives, you have to admit that these guys look pretty good. They are less than half the cost of a lease line of the same speed. Not only that, but over the time I have had it, I have been running around 20% over what I am paying for. If you are't down for shelling out the cash, this may not be for you. But if you want a sweet connection, you should check it out.

Too Expensive

I would like to try it, but the I cannot justify spending 199.00 a month for internet access. Just isn't worth it to me. I will stay with Sprintbbd since that is my only option. Alviso doesn't have cable/dsl service. I can always go back to modem. YUCK. I will hold on till the end or maybe a new beginning. Who knows what is in store. I have had Sprintbbd since Nov. 2000, only once did it go down for about 2 weeks. That was at the end of March 2001 then it was hit and miss. Then Sprint fixed it. I have had nothing but trouble free since. I think people expect nothing but PERFECTION. The internet isn't a perfect system. It is unfortnate that when something breaks or doesn't work to our expectation we go lunar. If our car breaks down do we get as upset as when our internet access stops working? I would hope not, but reading some of these answers leads me to believe something else is wrong.

Too Expensive? - For Guaranteed Bandwidth?

I think many posters are confusing DSL and cable modem service with a guaranteed service level provider. I know several companies that have switched to DSL, only to switch back to quality service. Most DSL and Cable service providers cannot provide more than 50% of their advertised capacity during normal usage. Again, do not try to compare guaranteed quality services with cable or DSL as they are residential grade service.

Re: Too Expensive? - For Guaranteed Bandwidth?

Guaranteed Bandwidth or not.......I am not spending 199.00 a month for home use! Unless you would like to buy it for me. Then I would be forever grateful!
