Is it that pacbell is now usually capping at 768 or something.......also a 568/118......Um I don't know where your actually capped since your somewhere in that 768(which 568....below 80% advertised speed) or 608(which I highly doubt)........Um.......wow have you tweaked?

| Oh Good...it's not me! LOL!
I was beginning to think it was only me who was experiencing problems with AOL Plus!! LOL. Thank God it's not!
My experience in getting set up with the service wasn't that bad. The whole process took about 30 days. They first sent me the Actiontec external USB Modem, which looks like a toy, acts like a toy...and breaks like a toy. Made by Texas Instruments, it feels like something you'd buy at Walmart for about $12.95. And...it sucks. The first one fried on me. They sent me another one (they were pretty cool about that, btw). However...I kept having problems. Slow download speeds...slower than my 56k modem. Disconnects, etc. Finally...after having the tech support phone number ingrained in my head...and after having the phone company come out 5 times to check my line...I called tech support once again. This time...the guy asked what kind of motherboard I had in my machine. Interesting...no one had asked me that before!!
I told him it was an Azza motherboard running a Via Chipset. He told me that was the problem. The Actiontec USB modem is incompatible with the Via Chipset!!!!!!!!!!! You've got to be kidding, right??? Six months with crappy service...and I come to find it's an incompatible modem/chipset combination???? Why couldn't the first tech-support guy have told me that wayyyyyyyyy back when???
In any case...they assured me that once they sent out an internal modem (which is actually an ethernet card AND an external modem)...my problems would be solved. They were right. I no longer have noise on my line...and am able to log on at will (what a concept!)
HOWEVER....my best case scenario is 425 down and 107 up!! I've tweaked...and double-tweaked. No improvement. Fortunately, I have the DSL at only $19.95/mo. as I was one of the first guinea pigs to sign up.
When I see people with speeds of 1,000/650...I can only wonder what it would be like to play Delta Force 2 online at Novaworld with THOSE speeds!! As it is...my lag is so bad I can't kill a tree.
If you need to stick with AOL because of screenname, e-mail issues, whatever...just make sure you get the internal modem. Especially if you have a Via chipset on your motherboard!!!!! Good luck!

| AOL is your problem AOL's proxy is what's screwing up your ping times/connect speeds. From experience, i can easily tell you that any form of proxy is really bad for a connection, and on AOHell's crap, it just gets worse. When I had AOL, I couldn't even get anything CLOSE to 400ms ping anywhere I went.
I say what that tech told you was absolute bull. Either you should've told him to cancel (and go with a proper Telco ADSL or cable-net), or demand a different modem type.
Don't give AOHell ANY slack. They don't deserve it. They are a bigger monopoly than Microsoft, and MS actually HAS working products!
My only suggestion to anyone fed up w/ AOL is "get a new ISP." It only gets worse from the first time you have to ask them for any help.
STAY AWAY from all of AOHell, including its AOHell Minus DSLow crap-vice. Steve Case has only helped prove how nasty he is with more of these reviews. [text was edited by author 2001-12-04 23:05:39]

I had AOL 56k for 5 years. Then i decided to get DSL and AOL PLUS sounded good. Wrong, i tried it for 1 free month and found out that it wasnt even near what i expected. It took them 1 month to send me the modem!!! And when i installed the modem it took me 50 mins. It was also as fast as 56k. Their service was even worse. I called them 6 times and they did nothing to help me fix my speed problem. NEVER TRY AOL PLUS!!!!!!!

| AOL DSL sucks I called them 37 times. Out of those 37 times, only 34 times did I get through without them hanging up on their end. The latencies went up to 500ms, the speeds went down to 212k(on the 768k line), and ti was provided by verizon. I have verizon now, and well, just look at my review it speaks for itself. AOL ruins the service.
Hell versions of AOL 7 from early June caused errors in the popular at the time file sharing app Gnucleus, don't even get me started with the software...
And verizon was so much cheaper for the same service! 5 months of $30 a month, one month free, and $35 after all that! AOL charged one month free and $55 a month after that, pathetic! -- Ignorance is bliss 128k MP3 is not even close to cd quality. Don't believe what ads tell you. I'm a tech junkie so maybe most complaints are related to setups which I'm fairly familiar with already, but I can tell you my ping times for online gaming has been outstanding. This depends on hops to servers, so anyone can have complaints about broadband connections depending upon location, but I couldn't be happier and I definitely love the AOL 8.0 features. Its about time they made a release that was everything I expected.

So I am using free High Speed Cable and loving it one screen name at a time. Actually I split one of my screen names off and set it up as a Bring Your Own Access and get all screen names on at the same time.
