Try a firmware upgrade...

Having purchased that cable modem two years ago, chances are there is a firmware update for it. It never hurt to try it. Visit the Optimum Online forum and try to inquire about a firmware upgrade for your modem. I purchased a Motorola SB4100 modem three months ago, and there has been one firmware update release for it already. The update for it only improved speeds, and some claim it has also improved overall performance. Results do vary.

Aside from very heavy traffic tripping this unit up, all of my problems have been "infrastructure" related and not the fault of the cable modem. Cablevision/OOL has reportedly done work on the head-end several times since quite a few people in my area have had similar problems.

Besides, there is no published method to update the firmware on these, nor are there any updates available.

The problem with heavy-throughput causing the modem to drop sync is known, and the CMX also has a reputation for not being the fastest on the market. I live with it for now until I'm driven to replace it.

Actually, I have followed the forums for over 1 year (just never registered). No there has never been mention of firmware update for CMX. No there are no posting about firmware updates in the forums either. Other forums (DSLR is certainly not the only one around) have all pretty much agreed as well. BUT, If you do have a specific link to a reference of firmware update please pass it on.

Like I said: The CMX is very well known to not be a fast modem. This modem has not even been manufactured in over 1 year. Also, my speeds aren't exactly terrible and the modem has been very stable with the exception of the one condition. This is VERY well known, and it is very well known there will be no fix for it.

Maybe when I have not much else to do I'll contact OOL Tech to see if he has more info.

Unfortunately this would not apply to the CMX. The original version of this unit was unidirectional and needed a phone line for upstream. I waited until the DOCSIS compliant bidirectional version was released, but unfortunately there isn't anything can be done for this modem. No firmware updates (don't even think it is possible) are available. I've worked in over a dozen forums and we all agree - it works, but it ain't fast by any means. And if you push it too hard it decides to "take a break" and loses sync.

There is no administration address for this modem either (IE: no IP to telnet to or point your browser at) so the notes in the FAQ about checking signal levels, etc won't work. There is a 9 pin serial port that displays minimal info when the modem first powers up but it is pretty much useless.

Like I said: this unit is a dinosaur. It was one of the first DOCSIS models released by any manufacturer and it shows. BUT, it still cranks along and as long as I give it love and tenderness it remains reliable.

Excuse me, but where do you get 8mbps down? I'm lucky if I get 4-5 mbps down, but I am not complaining. Nor did I complain in my review. In fact, I specifically said

Performance is not what it had been but is still fast

Don't hate, my man. Take comfort in the fact that OOL users will see their speeds slow down. Maybe not today or maybe not tomorrow or, hell, maybe not until 2005, but it will probably happen.

I have to ask

How do you know your modem loses sync?

I'm using an Adaptec/Cogent 6911 NIC and while windows (95, 98, NT, 2K) doesn't specifically include a driver for this card it does have a generic driver for the chip. The generic driver doesn't handle loss of ethernet link properly (er, at all?) and when link drops, even momentarily, i lose all connectivity.

The CMX drops link very briefly when it reaquires, cutting me off cold. Under Win2K i can disable/enable the NIC from the control panel to fix this but under 98 it was a reboot. Got kind of annoying until I "upgraded" the driver to the win95 version (certified for use with 98) - that solved the problem.

I now have the CMX relatively in my sight, and the front-panel lights flash to indicate when the modem is trying to reaquire sync. Usually happens pretty quickly (less than 30 seconds), but sometimes takes a rather long time (10 minutes or more).

Supposedly the CMX logs a message to the serial port each time but I haven't bothered to check into this.
