| Re: Lucky You! Like you I think Cable in general expecially Cable Broadband needs major competition. There are only 3 big competitors that can even put a scratch on AT&T and it just so happens one of those companys merged with AT&T leaving only 2 people to stand up to them. Mainly Cox and Time Warner (RR). They have the 2nd and 3rd largest databases next to ATTBI. I fear that soon just like in the Telecommunication market we will be seeing "Cable Internet Break Ups" just like how AT&T Telecommunications got broken into 7 competitors (I think thats the right amount) years ago. Same will probably happen now with thanks to Cable Broadband but in the Internet department. I have no doubt within 3-4 years with AT&T buying out all these Cable companys not to mention the merger with Comcast and AT&T that there will be a new genre of break ups and that will be in the Cable Broadband market. I am assuming when it does happen that the governement will probably break them up into 3-6 seperate companys depending on how many years in the future it happens and how many customers they will have. | |

| Yep it is nice, too bad I spoke...about 20 mins after I posted that, poof the connection went down for 2hrs. Stuff like that always happens to me...lol Well being rogers is rogers who can say for sure. Most compaines around here have their own private networks. So if your on rogers your on them, if your on bell your on them as well. A few of the local providers buy leased lines from either one or from a private company. But thanks, you are right though we need some serious competition. Where I live for cable providers I have no competition at all, since rogers is the only cable provider that's all you have, with bell(dsl only), some compition exists, we have 3 main providers for that bell, execulink(over sold), and dsl.ca
Unfortunatly, the lack of true compition of any kind means that the provider doesn't care at all what types of connection or quality or anything else.
But thanks, now that I've spoken though...I'll probbly be cursed =)

| Hehe .. yep it never fails after you post a good review the inevitable happens! Go figure .. the exact same thing happened to me after I posted a great review on EarthLink, the DSL service throughout Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, and a few other states, went to complete crap from the hours of 2pm til 12am and is still that way. Heck that happened about a month ago or so. I guess they're upgrading equipment and that usually takes at least a month or two.
Anyhow .. again, Good Luck with Rogers!
Bring on the competition! PLEASE!

| Dynamic IP doubtful You posted above and said you had a dynamic IP. This is actually impossible. I thought I had a similar thing for a while (i'm on the exact same service except half price for 6 months) but then it switched. It switches at random times. It all depends on how serious the traffic is. If the DHCP server is loaded, then it will ask your modem if the comp is turned on. If it's on, then it will leave you your IP. However, if it is not, it will reassign you an IP when you turn on your computer, and will give your old one to someone who came online. This only happens however if the server runs out of IPs. It is possible that that won't happen for a while (ie you don't go off during peak hours or the server doesn't experience IP shortages). This is all because there is a finite amount of IPs in general, and some are resereved for private networks. ISp's have only a finite amount of Ips to give out. | |

| DHCP pool IP addresses are assigned in a block to a DHCP server which normally hands them out on a first come first serve basis. The DHCP server is actually assigning the IP on a lease basis, the duration of which is configured at the DHCP server. When the lease on the IP expires the machine using it must renew the lease with the DHCP server. Otherwise, the DHCP server will return that IP address to the pool to be handed out to the next requester. As long as you renew a lease on an IP address you hold, every time it expires, you may keep it almost indefinitely. If it ends up back in the pool then it is unlikely you will get a lease on the same one again... though it could happen. | |

| Re: DHCP pool Before the network changes, I could release the IP as often as I wished and I would always get the same IP back. I won't anymore. I'd guess that the DHCP server that was used here has been centralized to another city. London would be my guess, and guessing by that .rss. tag you could tell me for sure.
Woodstock has lost it's Phub as well, so that wouldn't surprise me at all and would make alot of sense considering the change and increase in the number of address pools that we have here. -- Downhillbattle.org The Art of War Bush/Cheney 2004;Alliance.ca

| One idea for fixing Rogers cable problems This is a bit of a long shot, but it goes back to when I first got Rogers high speed a few years ago (I later switched to Sympatico and now am going back to Rogers, call be fickle). Back then, they did their own installs, including the NIC and drivers. I had a horribly unstable and slow connection for the first 3 weeks with Rogers. And finally a bright tech asked me to check the NIC driver - duh, the installer had used the default Windows driver, and as soon as I installed the right one (from the diskette which the installer had left behind lol), it worked like a charm, instantly. So it's one thing to check if you're having problems, especially if it's your first-time using a NIC. | |

| Re: One idea for fixing Rogers cable problems A good idea, unfortunately not one that would be the end be all solution for me. This system is set though a switch, but the main connection is routed through a Intel 82559 NIC, on Windows 2003 Server.
But not the NIC, not when I can plug and pray with one of the other dozen or so NIC's I've got floating around here. A small suggestion for next time...just check a persons profile as well, they sometimes have their network setup in it as well. Mine is somewhat incomplete, but I do have most of my setup listed.
