AccDotCom Reliability?

Hi. I read your review of AccDotCom with interest. I am in Walkersville and they have been working on getting me up and running for over a month. My wireless connection is intermittent most of the time and when it is working I'm getting 500kbps max. Many times it is much slower. I get very different results each time I run the test. I wish I could get your setup for $75 a month! I'm paying the same price for what turns out to be 500k max, and much of the time it doesn't work at all.

They made me a relay base station. I don't have a T1 line coming in, I'm just a relay from the Walkersville area back to the mountain on the other side of Frederick. I'm using wireless from my house out to the base in the back yard. So I'm like a regular subscriber in that respect. Judging by my service it looks like this base isn't working real well, even though he tells me there is a good radio signal.

They must have tied you right into the T1 line in your basement. The antenna at your location is a base and is not being used for your access.

Mike is working on it constantly. I hope he can make it reliable. He is a good guy but I am frustrated with the service so far. I am trying to remain confident that he will eventually get everything working. When it is working it's great (even 500k is great). But when it goes down it's frustrating. Even when it's reliable I would still like to see the 1mbps speed that I am paying the $75 for. If you mention me to Mike I'm sure he'll know who you're talking about.

I'd like to hear some stories and your thoughts about Mike and AccDotCom.

Re: AccDotCom Reliability?

The only new reliability anecdote that I can add is that their DNS seemed to be responding very sloooowly for a while. I could still ping my stuff at my office so it wasn't the connection. I experimented with substituting other DNS servers for the one that Mike gave me and had very good results with 205.171.3.65 (resolver.qwest.net)after I saw from traceroute that traffic was going through Qwest after one hop.

It sounds like my connection is different than what you have. If you're a wireless relay to other wireless clients than it sounds to me like there could be quite a few others sharing the same T1. If it's a sharing / capacity thing, does your connection speed up when most people would be sleeping (like 3am)?.

When I was using my Adelphia cable modem, it was slow normally and dead during the "peak" times of noon and 5-6pm.

Mike sounded like the tech guy and someone else was the money guy. Mike was available and responsive to me and I hope he can get your connecting working properly...

Hmm I live in walkersville and this sounds interesting but not for 75/month. Have they mentioned anything about lowering price to around 50/month? And what's the deal with no DSL in walkersvill. Our CO is live and I call them all the time about it. Damn Verizon.

Not $75 anymore

After unanswer email, I called, now it seem they merge with some other company. Fee now goes up to $99 bucks/month + $250 installation. And speed goes down to 384kb. Not worth it for me.

Re: Not $75 anymore

This is interesting. AccDotCom merged with Frederick Wireless. I called Frederick Wireless to inquire about their access out here in Walkersville. This is when I learned they had merged. This guy was surprised that AccDotCom was not providing decent service in Walkersville. He said he thought this was a bright spot in their network. Looks like he got some bad information from his new business partner. I imagine he will be sorry that he merged with this company.

I think that Frederick Wireless has always been more expensive. I imagine that is where your price increase is coming from.

AccDotCom has tried to get my site working since February and has stopped responding to my email messages in the last couple weeks. I finally got an answer out of them and he has decided that my site is not going to work. I wish he would have thought it through before cutting my tree and putting an antenna up there. So I'm off to look for another provider. Satellite is the only option I have at this point.

Sorry to hear the table has turned on you with AccDotCom. Good luck.
