Huh?

I checked the site...they have nothing for $79 a month. They offer 256/256 service for $99 a month.

So, how do you get ot for $79 a month, and how do you get "T-1+ speeds" for that amount to boot? T-1 speeds are 1.5mbs up and down.

Yeah I sell Wireless broadband. Guess you guys don't know the difference between CIR and MIR.

CIR is what you SLA (if you ISP is worth their salt) will say is what the ISP Commits to (the 'C'). The Maximum (the 'M') information rate is what it will burst to. Don't read too much into the burstable rate, as it will change. It's like cell companies that sell 1000000 minutes, but all but 100 are nights and weekends.

Good luck, shoppers and look for that SLA.

Re: hmm, I dont think so.

ROTFLMAO I know what the hell is up with that?

BTW most Wireless providers offer you an Average of 1.5Mbps but when they say like 256Kbps for a certain price its like you shouldn't get anything lower then that. I learned that from a few people who work for wireless companys and a few emails here and there to the providers.

speeds

According to the pricing page, the 1000/1000 (the closest to t1 speed res package) costs $299/month. I wouldn't buy the upper tiered packages unless there was a SLA. of course at these prices for hardware/service i doubt overselling would be a problem.
256/256 - $99/mo
512/512 - $199/mo
1000/1000 - $299/mo
And thats for the residential class service!

Can't help it if you don't believe me....

Gosh, I'm still smokin' from all those flames

Well, the $79 price was a special offered for a limited time to new subscribers in Los Altos/Los Altos Hills.

Following is a speed test on my connection from dslreports,
I've also logged numerous speed tests as part of my connection monitoring...you have but to check.

Test running..........
** Speed 2904(down)/2639(up) kbps **
(At least 58 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logged result.
Finish.

I agree. I have 2 wireless companies (neither one of the above) running through a dual wan router and both of these companies show low speed packages but it's so that people don't get bent if there is heavy traffic. Unpluggedinternet for example gives everyone 1.5Mb and throttles back traffic to the users service level as traffic increases. But if there is no traffic, even the 64K level service will get 1.5Mb.

apology

it's not that i didn't believe you, RC51rider, it's that the current trend in ISP's is to oversell a product to the point that it blends in with the others in terms of speed, and as the subscriber-base grows, slowly lower the price (not too much) so that when you call to complain they can use the price/product speech against you and convince you to stay. worked with me when i called my local cable company about RR, and they said you'll never find a DSL at this speed at this price.

so please accept my apologies dude, it's just that saying someone sucks and then putting them as a 'smooth ride' is double-speak. make up your mind, and explain why the pricing is the way it is and no one would bother you. later.

Re: apology

KO, this was the first time I've posted here and I guess I left out a few of the important details...sorry 'bout that too. I'm sure my service will get slower as the subscriber base builds; but right benefiting from a new tower and low subscriber base in my area.

256/128 speeds SUCK

I would check again about DSL. Most of the Bay Area is covered by RT's now at least. For that "special" price of $80 a month, those speeds stink.

Re: 256/128 speeds SUCK

What is RT?????

Im in the 510 area code, Newark, CA. I was stuck with the only option of using Pacific bell 128k up and 1.5 mbps down. It was alright, but i needed something much faster for my gaming needs. So i finally talked them into letting me order 384k up and 6mbps down. If there are othr ISPS in my 94560 area code please let me know.

Re: 256/128 speeds SUCK

Going faster will not help you game unless you are talking about hosting in which case the extra upload bandwidth will do you fine. Problem is the cost for those higher speeds is a bit high for most folks.

RT = Remote Terminal which allow people who are too far away from Central Offices of their local phone company to get DSL via these sheds that have been setup all over the state that are kind of an extension of a CO via fiber optics.

what game is 1.5/128 not fast enough for?

the most bandwidth i've seen a game use is 8k, half of your max upstream

Still no options

Well, I didn't go with Gatespeed because I have tons of money and don't mind spending it; I checked all my options (with many ISPs) and this is the best I could get without going to a satellite based connection...and that has other issues. On the plus side, Gatespeed has got me up to 256 Kbps on both up and down links. And that's just about twice as fast as my previous ISP, which was charging my $90 mo.

puhlease....

sir, you have been misinformed on IDSL and your sattelite connection. Infact your idsl line is MUCH MUCH SLOWER. your speed tests show at least 2 megaBYTES down and up(rather amazing!), and your idsl line is about 10 percent of a MegaBYTE so ya

Re: puhlease....

I'm happy with Gatespeed; in fact, before I started recording my speed tests I was hitting over 3MBps up/down. Then, Gatespeed implemented bandwidth limiting to stabilize the link at the tower, after which my speeds dropped to slow modem rates for a while but they've been steadily improving, and now I get 256Kbps consistently (which is what I pay for) so I'm not complaining. If they unthrottle my link some more and the data rates take a significant turn upwards, well, that's 'gravey'. And yes, it's a really an improvement over my previous IDSL connection .

Cannot Disagree

Hey Guys,

I have had Gatespeed broadband for about a year now. Great speed ~ 2048Mbps up/down. They are expensive but the only option available to me, so my company pays for it (~200/month). Customer service has been great for me. Also latency is LOW - between 6 and 10 Ms from the abovenet backbone - »www.above.net/cgi-bin/ping . Packet loss can be an issue sometimes but not enough to complain, considering the distance from my house to the POP on Black Mountain (Los Altos) is about 12 Miles.

Cheers,

Ravi

Give me an option

@force10networks.com

GateSpeed just not cutting it anymore...

GateSpeed is the only option for me, and when I first signed up they seemed like a great outfit. Friendly order-takers, quick to show up and install.

When problems started a week after installation (and never let up) the support and resolution side of the house dropped the ball time after time. "We'll look into it and call you back" is the standard line they give (at least they sound sincere when saying it) - but I never once received a return call. My service eventually returns to its standard 5% packet loss from the 40%-100% it hits between noon and late-night, but that doesn't seem to be from any work they have done. Excuses have ranged from tower antenna readjustments to interference with a local TV station to rooftop antenna alignment (and a number of others that just go on and on). After awhile I just got sick of calling and reporting problems since I could tell they were not able to do anything to address the issue.

It still beats dial-up (when it is working), but as soon at AT&T, SBC, or someone else offers service (not that Los Altos is making this easy) I'll most likely be jumping. A short-term hard up/down of the service so long as I have dial backup is better than an unusable high-loss service with NO support. I would really like to support the local folks, but without service stability and any customer care, I just can't do it.

Re: GateSpeed just not cutting it anymore...

I doubted about this when I read you guys' discussion about Gatespeed. To do marketing, people usually offer great service, great deal, and then they start "decay" their quality after time. Most of the small businesses follow this same pattern.
For a dedicated DSL or T1 services, I would prefer to go for a big guy like AT&T or at least SBC, which I am with now. If you want to do some web hosting, you will definitely not want people complain about losing connection to your website. Wireless DSL services may not be dedicated and reliable to carry your business. The only problem for them is big guy competitors and funding. They're not only living on your payments to buy their services, but also the funding that investors put in for their business. There're a lot of thing happen "behind the scene" that can be our criteria to look for a better service and a better price.

Good lucks
