Comcast is Great - As Long as It is working

Here it goes..felt compelled to write something about Comcast, even though I am leaving their service for work related reasons. (Better Price). Anyway, I have been with @Home (Comcast) for 4 yrs now. I will say that when the service is working, they are lightning, I usually have download speeds of up to 1.1 meg, however, I do not usually get the upload speeds as promised. The only real complaint I would have about Comcast, Do not let it go out of service and do not MOVE!!

Comcast Support is virtually unheard of. If you have a problem, or their system is down, they have you reboot the modem 5 or 6 times, they then tell you they cannot see you,(no duh, that is why I am calling) and then tell me it appears to be my issue, but they will gladly send a tech out in two weeks at a cost of $35 an hour to attempt and fix my problem. With that I usually say thank you, I will wait till you fix your network issue, and no doubt, usually less than a day, everything is back up and working again! With the moving.....they cannot figure that out! When I moved, took me 3 weeks and 21 phone calls to get service back (with a NEW ACCOUNT no less!)

Comcast Rulles

I am paying 52.95 a month, my speeds are 3985/358, never down, I had it since @home days. From Cable to DSL ...?
Gotta be a morron, plus DSL is also a shared connection plus it is slower. what an idiot.

DSL Isn't shared, it has each person has their own speed. Cable is shared aka ppl on a node thats why you get all them speed fluctuations at peak times.

Re: Comcast Rulles

If you say that DSL isn't shared then you need to do some more reading!!!

@verizon.net

I would also like to point out that ADSL is NOT shared like cable is. Each line is dedicated (unlike cable) AND Verizon ADSL is now 1.5/250 in speed making it comparable to Comcast for LESS money. In fact even at the slower 725/125 line speeds it is more reliable, has lower latency and better thruput than Comcast in the heavily populated areas around here (NH).

Also, Verizon DSL is also the ONLY ISP (as in none of the others) who refuse to share information with the RIAA per court order. Comcast on the other hand is one of the largest providers of personal information.

As to tech support I have found Comcast to be beligerant, rude and misinformed with every call I have made on behalf of my customers. Verizon techs may not be too bright at the tier 1 level however they are polite, speak English and are quick to pass you off to tier 2 when they get stumped.

Re: Comcast Rulles

DSL may not be shared at the node like cable is, but it is shared on the uplink from the DSLAM. Providers (including Verizon) tend to oversubscribe the uplink (N-T1s, DS3, OC3, etc) as much as 20X in places. This is also true for the uplink from a Cable Head-End.

As far as latency, DSL tends to have more latency in the last mile due to the FEC (Forward Error Correction) used. It can be even worse if your provider is using the interleaved mode of DMT rather than the fast mode. Latency out of the Network Service Provider's (NSP) is another story. That latency is more dependent on the uplink and over subscription.

I have to agree that Comcast Tech Support is spotty at best. I have had pretty good luck w/ Opt-Online Tech support and Verizon Tech support, but then again, I have heard horror stories with all three. In th end, your tech support experience with any NSP is just as good as the tech support rep you connect with and the complexity of your problem.

Re: Comcast Rulles

Thanks BBEngineer for the intelligent post. I was origianlly a Comcast subsriber, then changed to Verizon DSL after I found out that they increased their speeds to 1.5 mps. What they didn't tell me I had to be within 2-3 miles of their facilities in order to get the higher speed. Comcasts service and reliability has improved a great deal. Their support technicians are not well informed, but then again niether are Verizon's. Thankfully, the service is reliable enough, and there is enough configuration info on the web to make up for it. Upload speeds are now consistant at 2.8 mbs and got reconnected at 19.95/month for first 6 going up to 42.95 after. A good deal.

I agree, you couldnt have said that better.
one other thing is that people tend to forget, or maybe they just dont know, is that most of the people in the phone support, are under trained, and alot of the reason for this, is because it has a high turn over rate. it is a very frustrating job, ive done it for four years, their are alot of bad tech support out their, but at the same time, their is just as many or more customers that think they know what their doing, and they really dont have a clue, or other wise known as, knowing just enough to be dangerous.

Happy Comcaster

Very happy with Comcast and the tech support is gret.
