That's Great !

I have 2 wireless providers (neither the one reviewed) and also am happy with service. I know a lot of people reading about wireless may be wary about it's performance but I can say I get excellent latency and great DL speeds over wireless with no service issues. Anyone looking into broadband really should give wireless a shot...even if it's a little more money...you won't be sorry.

Re: speed

Fortunately FWISPs being smaller are quicker to react to such problems.

wireless

What does a wireless internet connection receiver look like? Does it look like a satellite dish or something different?

Re: wireless

Here's an example:

Antenna is on the left. About 12" by 12" although some antennas are smaller. Indoor Ethernet-based unit on the right.

This is just one example. There are literally hundreds of other units that may be used. Simply depends on the WISP's infrastructure.

For Airlogic, it is a small reciever around 8 inches long by 3 inches wide and 2 inches deep.
It is much smaller than my Sprint Broadband reciever.....

Up and running?

Hey all. I have recently been in contact with a guy from AirLogic and have been told numerous things. But the thing i really want to know is WHEN this thing is going to get installed at my house? They have called a few times asking weird questions that dont get anything done apart from confuse me and make me ask for questions...which means wasting time. So please someone tell me when will this thing be 100% READY to be installed in Vernon Hills(Sub division is Stonefence Farms).
Thanks
Tony

Re: Up and running?

AirLogic is in the process of being certified by the village and they are getting a batch permit, so customers do not have to. The reason why they may ask you weird questions is to find out whether or not your house would be a base station or something like service hub. They were telling me that the equipment is very expensive, latest in technology, and they have to make sure that these base stations are in the perfect spot so that everyone gets better recption. Has anyone heard about their redundancy? I heard that they have a redundant network from 3 different providers. A guy from Airlogic told me that if one goes done, you will still have service but it might be a little slower. Something with a BGP?

It should be available in Stonefence right now. The one area that I am aware of which does not have access yet is Deerpath, due to trees. I have been told that there are a couple of solutions taht they are trying to implement (Water tower Antenna and Fire Station Antenna).

Is this really worth the cost?

Is this really worth 65$ MINIMUM? IF so, someone come up with a GOOD reason. I have heard that wireless is EXTREMELY unpredictable so why should i not think the same of AirLogic?

Re: Is this really worth the cost?

It's worth it when it is the only option. AirLogic is reliable because they have 3 different carriers that provide them with service, so there is a redundant connection. This is the first time that I have ever heard of an ISP that does that. How reliable is AT&T? That's funny.

That depends on the reason you want broadband.

I want it so I can work from home instead of taking the train. (Cable Modems prohibit VPN connections, which I would need, and are not yet available; DSL *may* be available some time next year.)

For me it is looking at $65-AirLogic vs. $120-Metra (Plus Parking(~$30), plus existing ISP(~$20), plus 3 hours of commuting time a day). More time plus ~$100 less to spend each month makes it a pretty clear win.

As the Limey Sponge says, what are you looking for in broadband? What problem are you trying to solve?

Me? I already work from home, and 128K ISDN was too slow for some of the projects I work on. (I'm a programmer for a MAJOR technology company)

I got 10-12 times the speed, at a cost of $15/month less. Granted, I get reimbursed the cost, so I don't have to rationalize it as much as if it were coming out of my pocket, for goofing off in the evening and weekends. Reliability hasn't been a problem, but this is my fourth day. I'm curious as to what it'll do in nasty weather (severe thunderstorms, heavy fog or blizzards)

If all you need out of internet connectivity is to surf and maybe download some software, then this might not be the solution for you. I don't notice a huge difference in surfing. I still get the 'Waiting for web site' message with a slight pause. When the remote site starts sending data, it blasts down in a fraction of a second.

Sometimes I need to move 10-20 (or more) meg files around. That's where I get my productivity gain.

Happy Customer...

Hey all. I just got installed with AirLogic. I had some troubles to begin with because of my computer...not the service. I am now enjoyed zooming around online for the 1st time in a month after i lost my cable.
If you dont have any other choice AirLogic is the way to go. They were extremely helpful when i ran into some trouble. And although its a lil expensive (hey i dont care about that as my dad pays for it...but some others might..) it is well worth it all.

Outstanding!

I have the service installed now, and it is absolutely outstanding!

The install went smoothly, the service is lightning-fast, and the guys at Airlogic are great to work with. This is definitely the way to go, especially in the broadband black-hole we're in.

Airlogic - questionable technology

Tried to get this service in Mundelein since we can't get Cable or DSL. Turns out I can't get this service either, even though their large base station transmitter array is about a mile from my house. This technology is direct line of sight only. Unfortunately, they are trying to sell their service in one of the most heavily wooded areas of Lake County. Their service is also severely affected by weather from what I hear. Not a much better technology than worthless DSL.

Re: Airlogic - questionable technology

I live in Mundelein and I have the AirLogic service. I get about 1200 upload and 1500 download. Its funny having a T1 line for 65 dollars a month. I don't know who you heard that the service is affected by weather. I haven't had any problems during the rain, but when lightening hit the tower service was slow. After a day or so service was back to normal. I would recommend the service to everyone who can get it.

Burstable? What about streaming?

I live in the South end of Long Grove - Between the 53 expressway and old 53. I can't get DSL... my whole neighborhood will never get DSL because our circuit is so far from the phone company, it needs a digital repeater. We don't get cable internet either, probably because we're not a viable market - large coverage area v.s. low population.

Anyway, I wanted to know if this "burstable" technology works with real-time streaming of, lets say, QuickTime or Real movies. I know Satellite Internet services have problems because they transmit packets in bursts, especially during uploads. The meter on your computer may say 1500K/sec., but that's a 1500K/sec. burst, a 3 second pause, and another 1500 Kburst - making it only 500K/sec. over the whole 3 seconds. If in that 3 seconds, the QuickTime stream plays all of the 1500K downloaded, you have to wait until it downloads another 1500K.

So, I wanted to know if when AirLogic says "burstable" it means the same thing as when the Satellite provider says "burst of packets". Of course, when I say "burstable", I point to things like a baloon or my co-workers big head.

Re: Burstable? What about streaming?

When they say burstable they mean that the speed isn't guaranteed like a T1 line. The speed ranges similarly like to a cable modem. Burstable basically means a free-for-all in a shared setting. In my area, they designate about 3 mpgs per sec and I have been getting great speeds like 1300/1000. I am not sure of your area but my naighbors and I had to rally for support. I know that they only want to go to areas where they can be profitable. I know that Long Grove has a lot of trees so they might actually give you a better service bc they might have to use 900 mhz technology, which means that you might not need an antennae on your roof. I would definitely recommend their service.

Re: Airlogic in Lake Zurich?

Sorry I don't have AirLogic but I do have DLS.NET up in Mundelein and they've been great. I get 1.3 to 1.4Mbps both up and down. If you check out their web side they're working on expanding coverage down in this area (will be putting up a base station in the antenna farm between Fairfield, Midlothian, Gilmer and Old Mc Henery roads. Two others that I work with have DLS.NET due to no Ameritech or AT&T and they're also happy with the service. The only down side is having to mount an antenna up on the roof, something that none of our wives are happy about but know we have no alternative.
Anon I have been with AirLogic for more than 2 months. There service is great and I have been getting great download/upload speed. I highly recommend their service. I live about 5 miles from the tower and the distance nor weather has been a concern.

Re: Airlogic in Lake Zurich?

Where do you live in Lake Zurich? North or South of 22? East or West of 12 or Old Rand?

I am trying to judge how good my reception would be at West Cuba/Quentin

I live North of 22. My brother-in-law lives south of 22 and he is also happy with their service. Make sure that there is line-of-sight with the tower. I would call them up and ask them to do a site survey. Before it was installed they came out to make sure that I could get a signal. As long as you can see their equipment on the tower and you do not have high tree coverage you should be ok.
