FASTNET Part II - News Server

I got a tech support reply about 10 minutes after I posted the original review. It seems that FASTNET outsources their news server through supernews, which serves millions of people. The tech said that the speeds I was getting (about 88 Kbps) were the best I was going to see ..

No biggie .. I don't spend gads of time on the NG's, but I just thought I'd let people know ..

2 Month Update

Well, it's been about 2 months since I've been online with FASTNET, and I can say with all honesty that I am 110% satisfied with them. My speeds are consistantly 540Kb downstream and 130Kb upstream with peaks up to 640Kb downstream!! Since I purchased the 608Kb downstream, the 540Kb is actually a bit high once you subtract 13% for TCP and ATM overhead. I can consistantly get 640Kb when I FTP to Redhat.com .. I don't know why, but I'm not complaining!!

I've had 0 downtime so far .. I leave my PC on all day (7AM - 10PM) .. it makes it alot easier to transfer important files (ahem, mp3's, etc) from work to home, and vice versa .. shh!! don't tell my boss!! hehe

All in all, I'm very happy .. I'm looking forward to getting my Linux box hooked up to act as a firewall/mail server .. I already have a web and FTP server setup, plus a software firewall .. if anyone has any experience in networking Linux with Win98, please email me some tips!!

Switch from BA to Fast.net?

I currently have 640 ADSL from Bell Atlantic. It goes down several times a week and I have to deal with junky PPPoE software. What are the steps that would need to be taken to switch to fast.net (or another provider)?

Many of you say Covad and BA came to your houses, what for? If my line is OK, would anyone need to come? Do they install a splitter so you don't have to use microfilters?

Thanks in advance,
-Nicholas

Re: Switch from BA to Fast.net?

As far as I know, 3rd party DSL providers (Covad, Northpoint, etc) cannot use your existing Bell Atlantic phone line for your DSL. But most ISP's will put a second line in for no charge (FASTNET does not charge for this). I think that this way is alot better since your DSL line is separate from your voice line.

Hope this helps!

News Server is not slow

I use NewsRover which is multi threaded. By default it allows for 2 threads. Bumped it from 2 to 10 and saw my throughput jump to over 70,000 Characters/Second on my 768K Line. I might even be able to get higher with some more tweaking. If I am not mistaken that's over 500K/Second.

Before the tweak it was 18,000 to 36,000 Characters per second.

Try this and let me know.
