I live in Oak Lawn, right outside of Chicago. Having the same problems. I use my connection for gaming and need low pings. Loved when it was @Home, then ATT got its Evil hands on it; capped downloads from 3.5 to 1.5 Mbits. A few months ago it dropped to 900 kilobits, and this month dropped to 300. Checked with Neotrace, pings from same servers on multiple tests are erratic ; ranging 20ms to over 100. I too called tech support. They are utterly worthless. Seems as if they're hiring high school dropouts.
Got a trouble ticket that went nowhere. I am currently switching to Covad 1.5/384 DSL. Maybe if more people complain or dump them, they'll get the message and hire competent technical support and actually start caring about their customers. If you live in or near Chicago, you owe it too yourself to not waiste your time under no circumstances get AT&T Broadband.

im hearing of the same problem locally as well
im from the schaumburg area (in cook county, IL) and i have a friend in the same area who is experiencing the same problems - we both have attbi
his connection gets slower as the day progresses and att keeps telling him its his fault though it was running well for more than a year until now
att seems to be having problems lately and it seems like its only getting worse
its pretty sad that they wont admit to a problem to their customers
i hope this is just a minor issue and doesnt continue or i will have to reconsider where to put my $50/month (:()
