Local question...

I live in the Puyallup valley where broadband has just been made available. Having been on DSL Reports or other sites, have you found what speeds/reliability you have or is it just now that you're up and running? Just asking, because I am on DSL w/o issues, but was considering upgrading to higher speeds or cable very soon.

Re: Local question...

I have only been with Attbi for 3 weeks. However, during those 3 weeks I have had speed tests consistently in the 1400s. I check almost everyday. My download speeds have been 170+. I signed up for 1500/256. When I was on DSL my speeds (post Qwest) were about 520, and for a while, when my ISP over sold it was less. I have several friends on Attbi who have had consistent speeds for a many months now.

Having said that, however, there are no guarantees. That is why it took me so long to sign up with ATT. I kept my DSL for 1 week after I signed up because I was worried, things might not work out. I noticed that there are some areas of the country (Seattle is one of them) where they have serious problems. Often that is because the bandwidth is over sold, or router problems are creating slow connections. My advice, talk to people who live in your area and see what kind of experience they are having. Visit the ATT Forums on this site, and look for posts from your area.

Routers and such

ATTBI does not prohibit routers/hubs/switches. They just will not provide any support for them, so if ya use one you are on your own. And if ya call in with no connection issues, expect to have to plug modem directly to a computer

bury time

Your lengthy wait on the cable being laid is due to the permit to burry from your city. Cable company submits request, hires locaters to locate all underground utilities, then waits for the city to approve permits to dig/burry. What company was the contractor with?

false accusations don't get anybody anywhere

man these submissions on dsl reprts make me a little upset, and you know i'm just going to quit reading them...and its a shame as i am one of the tech's your referring to....i'd hate to inform you, but comcast doesn't use scripts..and prolly why your not finding any support for the trace route, is one either your typing the command in error,2 something happened to your pc at the time of comcast take over which is strictly coincidental, that your pc won't run that command anymore, and if your looking to comcast to restore that you'll be waiting forever ,its something your pc manufacture would support, comcast does not block or prohibit and network commands on its customer's network...get real!! go to pcpitstop.com they will run the tracroute command automatically through a active x script....sheesh

Tracert

Actually from what I know is that Tracert isn't blocked on anything. Secondly if the CMTS has ping turned off, it won't work. The way (as i know it.. i could be wrong) is Windows Tracert does the 1st Hop, if it gets ( * )'s then it moves to the 2nd, then back to the first, and so on and so forth.. not like others who just continue to move on to the third hop.

Regardless I'm glad that your connection is stable and you are happy.

Re: Tracert

Well obviously Trace Route can be blocked. It may not have been intentional, but something was causing a problem with my use of Trace Route. As was suggested by "Mr. Anonymous, I did try running a Trace Route from a web site, and I got the same result. Maybe the use of the term "blocked" was too strong a word, but as I stated in my ISP review in March of 2004, after Comcast bought out AT&T cable, I lost my ability to perform a meaningful Trace Route. I stated that I would only get a response from the first two hops and last hop, everything in between timed out. I also stated that even when I connected directly to my cable modem (bypassing my two hardware firewalls/routers), and did so from four different computers, I still got the same result. Something was causing that inability to get a response for the 10 to 16 or so devices in between me and my targets. I don't know if it was the Thompson cable modem that I was renting from Comcast at the time, or it was something in Comcast's configuration of their headend devices, however, it began happening after Comcast took over. It was after I purchased my own Motorola SB5200, that the problem seemed to stop, so I'm not sure if it was a coincidence, or it was something to do with the modem itself. In any case, the problem went away.

As far as being able to block a trace route, right now, I can run a Trace Route and I get a response from my first firewall, but my outside firewall times out because it is configured to do so. After that, of the six or so targets that I tried to trace, I get a response from most devices in between, but on two of the targets (which includes the technical college where I work where the firewall is configured to ignore ICMP requests), when I get to the actual target, it times out until it reaches 30 hops which is the default for the maximum number of hops! The other target that timed out was the NY Times. It is not unusual for organizations to configure their routers or firewalls to ignore ICMP requests.
