You hit the nail on the head.

When it came to Verizon not showing up. This is a glitch when you're not using the LEC for the xDSL. The first company sends the order to the LEC with the information. Since you didn't have a phone number I'm willing to bet they sent your cell phone number to the LEC as your home number. The LEC pulls up the records for that number and it comes up with no information. You sit at home again. Small avoidable errors cause problems.

No surprises here

No surprises in this report.

SALESmen want to SELL what they have on hand, so naturally they tell you anything to get you to buy. Have you ever bought anything for more than $50 ? A car? A house? A television? A computer? Anything from Radio Shack? They say or do anything to get you to buy, it's not just Speakeasy.

Providing a telephone number to qualify that you know will be disconnected shortly seems foolhardy at best. Don't blame the provider for tripping over the kink that you put in the rug. You set yourself up for trouble there. I missed a payment on my BellSouth phone bill one month and my DSL went down with it, and did not come back up when the phone service did. God help you if you order your line disconnected and expect the DSL to be installed properly! It's a house of cards with 2 or 3 players involved as it is, don't complicate matters.

Comparing the fatter pipe that you ordered and the additional i.p. addresses and mail accounts with John Q. Public generic cable service is comparing apples and oranges, and is therefore invalid.

You should ALWAYS read business agreements before entering into them. This is not unique to Speakeasy. If you don't like the terms, either negotiate better ones or don't complete the transaction.

Boy, I'm sure glad that I'm not a residential DSL provider, I'd get gray hair from this kind of stuff! The tech support staff must be saints. I've seen reports similar to this one recently here and it seems pretty naive to expect the DSL provider to read the mind of the customer and anticipate the unusual or impossible.

See my Speakeasy review shortly, I am absolutely tickled silly with them, although it is very early on with their service.

Re: No surprises here

Of course salesmen want to sell; as I said they did everything "legally" correct but are more interested in getting someone in the door with perqs with obscured gotchas rather than making customers happy. It's more CYA but still make it look good, instead of "how can we serve you". I never said it was unique to Speakeasy, but it was meant as a warning to other folk who naturally have expectations that won't be fulfilled. Some businesses do it better, some less so. I do not feel that Speakeasy is very aggressive in this approach to customers, but it makes me want to hold them at arm's length rather than blithely accept an abbreviated statement over the phone.

No, it was not foolhardy to provide a soon disconnecting number for qualification. I explicitly asked the sales rep if it was acceptable to do so; she said "yes." I trusted her, and she either did not understand her internal policies or she did as I did and assumed the number was for loop length estimation qualification purposes only. As this was a separate loop, a working land phone is not necessary for addressing; a contact number and address are. These two numbers were deliberately separate when I signed up.

As to "apples and oranges", I don't understand why you made this statement. Usually you pay more for static IPs and wider bandwidths, whether DSL or cable or dialup; I was noting that there was a large difference in price for these extras. Over $100/month difference, in fact. I get benefits from this extra service that I am willing to pay for, but it ain't cheap.

Of course I should always read business agreements. But this is not a business agreement that was placed in front of my face for me to sign, nor was I directed to a particular link to view all information (other than "please view our website"). As for the modem rebate, you have to click on a link and read to the bottom of the linked-to PDF to note that the rebate will still apply if you have an order that is not yet completed so that you can send it in early. This is counterintuitive. In general, you have to fully explore the website to understand the out-of-the-way details. This is also error-prone, and Speakeasy can benefit from placing items in back corners. They have not aggressively done so, but not pointing out some items benefits them and not me.

So please take your preachy after-the-fact advice and use it more appropriately. Where were you last month?

OH PLEASE....you caused your own problem!

WHY IN THE HELL...would u knowingly give the # that was being disconnected, and beliEve the rep? If you know DSL uses a phone line...WHY o WHY would u say it's someone elses fault? IT'S YOUR FAULT!!!!!!!!! ALL YOURS!

U CAUSED YOUR OWN PROBLEM! sadly this is the fact for a lot of crazies...they blame someone else, when they cause their own problems...can I get an AMEN!

Re: OH PLEASE....you caused your own problem!

THIS DSL DOES NOT USE AN EXISTING PHONE LINE. THIS DSL DOES NOT USE AN EXISTING PHONE LINE. THIS DSL DOES NOT USE AN EXISTING PHONE LINE. Geddit? That's what "separate loop" means. THIS DSL DOES NOT USE AN EXISTING PHONE LINE.

By the way, this DSL does not use an existing phone line. It is installed on a separately provisioned loop (meaning a different pair of wires comes into the house). This separate loop does not carry a dialtone, and is common in SDSL installations that require a higher-quality connection.

If they are going to put a separate line in anyway, why do they need an existing phone number? That is my point. So it may be apparent after the fact, but the sales rep assured me it was okay. Being that Speakeasy is a high-tech operation, I thought they would be able to deal with something as simple as an address and a phone number without an existing phone line.
