| Anon | Question How is your download and upload speed in real KBytes that you will see?? I know you say you get 1.1-1.2Megabits down but is that equivalent to about 100KBytes down or so and you said 300-400KB up is that equivalent to around 40KB upload speed? Thanx. | |

| | Anon | After some tweaks to RWIN, I have benchmarked downloads as high as 140-145K Bytes per second. this was on large files (15+megabytes). Due to TCP/IP slowstart algorithm its hard to achieve these rates on small file downloads.
I downloaded the 50+ Meg Office 2000 SR1 in inder 8 minutes !!

| Re: Courious Distance from CO was 10,300 feet. I used a program called ispeed from High Mountain Software (downloadable). It lets you tweak TCP/IP parameters, but is geared to dial lines. I DO NOT use its tweaking capabilities. It has an ftp benchmark section that lets you pick a fast ftp site and specify a download file so you can do repeated tests. I located a very consistently fast Linux ftp distribution site and picked a kernel distribution package of about 16 megabytes. I test a download of this file several times a week to verify consistent performance. Ispeed gives you a running average download speed. It does not test upload speed, though. | |

| re the 7/15 update (outage)
There have indeed been a few brief outages since April, but not of any lengthy duration - except for one that I recall when the power went out in Rockville on or about May 11.
There was also a "service upgrade" performed early on June 13. Lasted about a half-hour.
On one occasion, I recall it being necessary to power-cycle my 5250; likely after one of the two aforementioned occasions.
There is a "network status" mailing list that CapuNet maintains. They don't spam out emails to the list for every little incident, but it's pretty good as a "heads-up" when consequential problems arise or are anticipated. Link below:

I have not had a single outage either since I switched to Capunet.

@toad.net | You do not have to go to Earthlink..... Actually you do not have to switch to Earthlink. You can switch to any Covad provider of your choice. just for general purposes

| Re: You do not have to go to Earthlink..... Please clarify. Earthlink bought our contracts.
I've not been told for sure that won't try to charge a termination fee if you swtich. Capu.net won't help you switch. When I started talking about an ISP switch form, the Earthlink guy said they don't do that, they cancel your line and you have to start all over again.
So, please explain, have you done this switch from capu.net as a terminated residential customer?

| Re: You do not have to go to Earthlink..... CapuNet worked out an arrangement whereby Earthlink would take their residential customers. Any prepaid balances would transfer and from what I understand that amount would be applied toward Earthlink services at Earthlink's rates, not CapuNet's rates. You will be offered equivalent service. If you have an existing DSL line, you will keep it and a software switch back at the DSLAM in the central office will redirect your line to Earthlink's network instead of CapuNet's. Some changes will be required on your end. But basically, if you decide to go with Earthlink, there will be no disruption in service (except for an hour or so when they do the cutover).
However, Earthlink is controlling the cutover and will schedule it with each CapuNet customer. I have not been scheduled yet. But I definitely am not cancelling or starting over again.
If you do not want to go with Earthlink, you may be able to get a release from them which will allow you to have your DSL line switched to another ISP of your choice, but you should discuss this with them. Talk to Dan Warne at Earthlink as he is the person coordinating the CapuNet customer transition.

| Re: You do not have to go to Earthlink..... I know all the general information you've provided I've talked to Earthlink a few times a week.
What I want to find out is if someone who was prepaid has successfully got an ISP switch form from Capu.net or Earthlink - and what were the steps, did they get their money back (for prepaid), did they have to pay a termination fee. Did eartlink cancel and make them start again (which is what I was told), or did they do an ISP switch for you with out dropping your current line, with no hassles and get you started on your happy way.

| After sending Capunet a registered letter that I wanted a refund on the remaining months of my one year prepaid contract, I got an e- mail reply that said they would forward my letter to Earthlink-- essentially telling me not our problem any more. They said EARTHLINK would contact me.
My first contact from EARTHLINK was my new user id and password for my new dsl mindspring account. I spoke with EARTHLINK on the telephone. They made it clear they were not forcing EARTHLINK service on any Capunet Customer but also noted they did not have my letter nor any account information which they promised they would get from Capunet and be back in contact with me. Is any one else out there in a similar situation? I would add that EARTHLINK has been exceptionally good to deal with on the telephone--quite professional.

| EARTHLINK TRANSITION ******BAD***** I've had capu.net 786/384K DSL service for 2 years - with 3 static IPs ($73/month). I actually get 786K in both directions and have maintained max bandwidth for over a year.
Now that I am being transferred to earthlink, I am having all kinds of troubles. I had to be on hold for about 2 hours total just to find out my ONE static IP address (since they wont give me 3).
I now have TWO different IP addresses resolving to my machine.
Many FTP sites I try to download from simply do not download. I cannot reach my own webserver, even from the machine it is running on.
Tech support via phone has been useless. Email tech support answers maybe 24 hours later and told me the dual-IP problem is because "you're either running a firewall, or using a misconfigured router".
I do not run a firewall. I do not own a router. They are wrong.
I've had bad service for about 36 hours now and am pricing out other DSL ISPs to switch to.
Earthlink sucks.
PPPoE is bull. I want REAL DSL. Not this fake dialup-emulated-over-DSL crap. I want my static IPs back. I want my capu.net back.

| Anon | switch CapuNet customers are now part of Covad's saftey net. Right now that means if you go to the saftey net website and fill out all the required information you will be automatically switched to Earthlink. That could be important later. Right now it looks as if Earthlink bought all of CapuNet's lines and are not going to want to allow customers to switch. (they probably paid a lot of money for those lines) Maybe knowing these politics will help someone. There is hope that since CapuNet customers are in SafteyNet that there is a lope hole which will allow customers to switch to another ISP without Earthlink's "permission" I hope that helped someone. When I find out more information I will post it. | |

| Re: switch Please do.
I had tried that route and was told by a Covad representative that we are NOT under covad's saftey net. Covad would not switch me to the ISP of my choice without a release from either Capu.net or Earthlink.
Capu.net is not giving switches to prepaid members - when I asked what if I went ahead with the switch I was told I would loose any prepaid balance. My prepaid is over $1500 and I'm not ready to just throw that away.
I have asked Earthlink about switching, first I got a no, we don't do that, we completely cut you off and you have to start again.
I have called again and this time someone is researching the answer and hopefully I'll get a response today.
Really, I can't see how it would hurt Earthlink to let customers switch, rather than penalize them by cutting off their service and having them start again. If we are going to leave, we are going to leave.
