| Re: Speed Factory Forum Yes. You'd think it would be in their best interests, at least for a local usenet group. Yesterday I was having a hard time pulling up various sites and called Support (after screwing with my router and pulling my hair out). They said it was a DOS attack that pulled down part of the backbone in the southeast. How many phone calls did they get that could've been resolved with a simple newsgroup notice? Last night I couldn't pull in dslreports.com (and I still can't pull up the forums). It must have been a system-wide outage, because I couldn't pull it up from my shell account in Pittsburgh either. But again, I'm thinking DNS issues? Router issues? | |

DSLR was definitely down for awhile last night, I had the same problem. They'd posted a notice about "down for maintenance." As for DOS attacks, yes, that could do it, but here again, SF needs to work out a way of notifying their subsribers directly by email, support newsgroup, and/or a forum here on DSLR. I will look for the official channels for starting up a DSLR forum for Speed Factory.
As for a support newsgroup, most ISPs of any size have their own root hierarchy on Usenet, like for example Directvinternet.support, etc. So, I think it would be up the ISP to set that up, since they'd need to register a heirarchy of new NGs. I really don't know that much about how Usenet works. As for tinkering with your Netgear router, if it's working I'd leave it alone if I were you. I don't think that was the source of the recent problems.

I will add a second or third or fourth at this point......I would like to see either a forum here or a newsgroup dedicated to SF. I have enjoyed their service for over a year but have had trouble with newsgroups as of late.
So count me in as a participant! [text was edited by author 2003-02-09 06:34:16]

| Forget the NNTP service
Stop and think for a moment. Why would any ISP (SF is not special here) want to provide a means for its subscribers to collectively get-together and complain?
Now, imagine this under a condition in which the people that would most likely use SF group on the NNTP server for complaining about the throttling of that NNTP.
I think they will illicit a road block for anything relating to NNTP if they can. Its just fortunate that the providers of BBR/DSLR are not an ISP puppet.

On the surface, you're right. And the giant ISPs, cable providers, etc. are moving in the direction of no employee/subscriber interaction if they provide local forums at all. But looking deeper, it's a very wise business decision for an ISP that, like it or not, is competing with giants like BSFA, Earthlink and Comcast. What does SF have to offer that the giants don't? And how do they get the word out without a multi-million dollar advertising budget (a drop in the hat to BSFA)?
They could take a lesson from the highly successful Panix, a regional ISP providing dialup and DSL, as well as shell access to subscribers all over the country. Panix has been here since the beginning and it maintains a superb news farm (text only) with local support and community groups. It occupies a niche market, and it's highly successful. It's honest with its customers and it listens, from all accounts I've heard. In fact, I'll soon be opening a $100/yr shell acct with them to check it out. Speedfactory offers a rarity among giant ISPs, and that's bridged DSL. Anyone who's had to suffer with the disconnects and irregularities that are commonplace with PPPoE, knows how hard it is to find a true bridged provider these days. And frankly, the future looks dim for regional ISPs. It would be a smart move on Speedfactory's part to open up to interaction between management and subscribers. Let us make you successful and develop a following in the Panix and early Mindspring mold.

| Stinks to be you Why do people like you think they are calling script readers when they call help desk. They do not read scripts. I know this for fact. I guess people call the help script reader to make themselves feel superior or something. Well if you were that smart you would not have to call for help. The truth hurts doesn't it!!! | |

| This is what I was hoping to hear
I currently have Speedfactory's routed 1.5Mb connection with a static IP which I love. The problem is that this same connection now costs $5.00 less than what I pay because they have moved all new subscriptions over to PPPoE. I will be moving in a month and have been trying to decide if I should switch over to the 3.0Mb connection since will be the same price as what I currently pay. The fact that I would have to use PPPoE has been biggest factor in my decision and your report that it is indeed as stable as the routed connection has swayed me.
I believe the reason it is that stable is because they do not cycle connections at regular intervals like Bellsouth does. This is what Moshe told me when I originally called them asking about the 3.0Mb service a couple of months ago.
