| not loving verizon! Had Verizon DSL for over a year, thought it was ok. Late December of 2002, switched to Optonline cable. I get about 8000kbps down and 800 up on the average or more, as opposed to 737 down and 128 up with Verizon DSL. The price difference was only 5 bucks more per month for optonline. The real decision maker was, ....2 weeks ago, I decided to switch my servicer provider for local and long distance service to AT&T from Verizon. I have had 2 great years with AT&T cellular, so I figured it made sense. (The switch cut my phone bill down $60.00 per month, which more than pays for my cable service!)....Now for the fun part.., Verizon still showed my DSL as active, so I could not switch carriers until I got them to correct this. Five hours on the phone with 8 different Verizon customer service people, and It was "still on the next day"! I decided to get a new phone number from AT&T to work around this. I will never use verizon again, thanks AT&T..and optonline rocks! | |

| Apples and Oranges I think comparing DSL to cable is like comparing dial-up to broadband in general. Of course the speeds up and down are going to be faster using cable. It was my experience, however, that as a Comcast subscriber, if I wanted to add cable internet, I would have to have a new line just for my computer run into the house. "Not an option" says Mr Landlord. I guess I felt like I should have been able to use/convert one of the 5 lines that are already in the house. No kidding, the previous owners must have been cable freaks to have 5 separate, legal lines run in instead of using splitters. At any rate, I chose DSL from Verizon, even though cable was my first choice because it required no additional lines into the house. But to use speed as a sole decision against DSL doesn't mean a whole lot. Apples and Oranges. | |

| Another DSL vs Cable Point You may have a higher speed package than DSL with your cable, but I will guarantee your ping rates are much higher than the ping rates of DSL. Also, your speed will always fluctuate and never be consistent. Once everyone in your area jumps on the cable bandwagon, and are all tied into the same node, your speeds will drop dramatically during peak user hours. DSL is a technology that is still evolving, and is only going to continue to get better as time goes on. The only way Cable can improve is to make it so you don't share bandwidth with entire sections of town, which will never happen. Enjoy your cable service. | |

| Re: Another DSL vs Cable Point Well said, deinabog. I have posted on this debate before and I am a big DSL supporter. The thing that always baffles me is this. How fast do you really wanna go anyway? Except for those people who have a small business in their home, 1.5 down seems fast enough. Also, if you apply some of the tweaks that are found on this site, your speeds should be good enough. I am not about to pay for something like cable, whose speeds diminish over time when I can get great speeds for less money.
Just my two cents. | |

| DSL and Monitoring alarms DONT MIX If you DSL with verizon and an always on monitoring alarm system they will interfere with eachother. You will get slow connection speeds (about 50% normal) and if you want to recover the lost speed you have to get a service call done by your alarm company (mine tried to charge $250 to install a $21 filter on the alarm to prevent it form taking over the DSL frequency of the line. Right now I am supposed to have the high speed package (1.5Mbps/384kbps) and my most recent results were 358/125 kbps and it shows on everything from downloading to browsing. So if you have such an alarm, save yourself the trouble and get Cable instead. | |

| Re: DSL and Monitoring alarms DONT MIX The above poster probably meant a home alarm.
Home alarms, along with some utility (water/gas) meters and other such devices often piggyback unto the phone line and use a dialup modem.
In such cases, one can wire up a NID splitter [research it on the site] which will split off the high frequency DSL signal from low frequency POTS signal.
$250 is outrageous but expect to pay at least $100 to have a NID splitter installed. Of course you could just splice on a microfilter... (which is what I did :d )

@rr.com | Alarm splitter Or you could just call verizon and have them do it for free. My inlaws had the same problem and verizon sent a tech out and he said it's their responsabilty to do it for no charge. | |
