You want speed from a real monopoly

then get cable. Understand how DSL is deployed. You could be on Frame which is why you are only getting 768. You may need to tweak your RWIN. If you are within 9,000' of the CO and on ATM, you can get 7.1mbs from a VADI re-seller. It won't be cheap but it will be fast. I could get that speed for$149.95/month if my loop was 535' shorter.

As for Frame vs. ATM, read this thread:

»WOOOOT - Fujitsu Modem Users CALL - I got it

First, see if you are on Frame. If you are, start a thread in the Verizon forum and we'll try to help you get switched and up to speed.

Compare your ping rates

I'll guarantee you'll be getting better ping rates with your DSL service than you'd get from Comcast.

Re: Compare your ping rates

Agreed there. I noticed steady ping rates within online games on DSL rather than cable. To me, that is worth its weight in gold.

Ex GTE

I am assuming that you are on the west coast. Nonetheless, you should be able to get 1.5M down if you are close enough to the CO. I called "billing" myself to make the change and should be at 1.5M by June 2. Be patient, for the money the 1.5M is well worth it with Verizon.

that's the way I do initial setup...

on the initial setup, a pc is off from network, connect directly to modem, the username and pwd you have create yourself
after that, you can use the username and pwd to setup your router/server, then all are good

Verizon DSL

I have the 3.0 Mbps down for $29.99 a month through Verizon. It tests in at 2.8Mbps at badwidthplace.com. It very rarely has down time and is extremely fast, I am very satisfied with it. All my paperwork arrived properly and set up was a very easy. (I didn't bother with the software they sent.) Seems like you may have had a bad experiance...hope you give it a chance.
