Alternate Access is no more!

(i) aa.net sold to Postnet last year (2000). And guess what: Joe Portman
did _NOT_ inform his user community of this beforehand. Gee, thanks,
Joe.
(ii) Postnet sold out to Earthlink, effective Spring of 2001.
(iii) "He's dead, Jim."

Funny. I've been using their DSL for over a year. Just got off the phone with their tech support. I wonder if they know that they're gone? I'm sure they'd like to go home!

They let go of their dial-up 56k access as far as I know, but DSL is still kicking. And, aside from waits on the phone, the tech support is good.

Lot's of downtime, terrible customer service

I have been an aa.net customer for almost two years. My experience up until this Spring was excellent. Things have gone steadily downhill since then. Uptime is a major problem for these guys now - so is admitting there are any problems. I have complained that I cannot reach technical support when their are outages, like this weekend, so they provided me with a pager number to their NOC staff. 24 hours ago my circuit went down, came up, went down, etc. I have a 200ms ping response to their DG, which should be about 20ms. I have been sending email and paging for 24 hours now and no one has gotten back to me, and I still have problems. The same goes with their billing department. You can't reach anyone at this place over email. They simple DO NOT RESPOND TO ANY CUSTOMER EMAILS. If you call you get a response, but it often takes a couple days, and the information you get usually isn't accurate. Anyway, I estimate their trouble-free uptime over the past three months at around 65-70%. For someone with a business level account that is hosting this is terrible. Even though it'll be a nightmare to re-register my static IP's I am willing to go through the pain now. I am looking this morning at finding another ISP, but I've posted this to hopefully save the next person some trouble. These guys used to rule, but no longer do. Save yourself some heartache and look elsewhere.

Weird, they told me

I bitched like crazy over the past few months...I am sure they hated me, however the weird thing is I got an email around 8/25 saying "Our last day of business will be Aug. 30th". That was it. I asked me friend (also on AA.net) and he received nothing.

I was also able to switch to ISO Media in Redmond (who is well rated on here) in about 4 hours through Verizon. So, for those being told 10-15 days just called Jason at ISO tomorrow morning and he'll set you up. Their rates and service seem excellent, and they even answer phones and email.

It is really lame they didn't post a thing just as a courtesy...I am still trying to figure out why they sent me something...especially after they bitched at me for posting the report above. They told me to "get my facts straight next time"...well, need I say more?

Sometimes the proof is in the pudding.

Surprised

Alternate Access (aa.net) is dead

I had Alternate Access DSL service until ~9:30 AM on August 30, 2001. The service slowed to a trickle and then went dead an hour later.

Not only do they not answer their phones and fax lines, their website has disappeared from the 'net.

I would say they are dead. They didn't inform Verizon (formerly GTE) of this either. They had transferred dialup customers to Earthlink earlier in the year.

I am in the process of switching to Verizon as my ISP. 10-15 days to wait!!! Argh... At least the total cost won't be going up.

Dead? Yep, it looks that way

They went dead sometime late morning on 8/30/2001. They don't answer the phone. There is no sign of them in any capacity on the net anymore. They're history.

Re: Dead? Yep, it looks that way. Maybe.

The web site (»www.aa.net) seems to have sort of reappeared, with a lot of broken or missing links and some connectivity problems. It seems to be hosted by an ISP in Eugene, OR.

They seem to have made a DNS change that enabled this on 8/27/01.

I have no idea whether or not this means that aa.net is still in business; since they don't care about their customers enough to even answer their phones, I find it hard to care either way.

AA dropped their customer service to a hardly acceptable level this year... over 60 hour gap every weekend. A working stiff would be hard pressed to resolve any issue with their crappy hours during the week. I never once received a reply from them to any of my emails. Now August 30th, No service and no answering machine taking calls indicates they're gone. And after 4 1/2 years, so am I... to another ISP. I don't care if they are still active anymore. Too bad because they had decent techs working support.
The strange thing is that a cousin sent me an article Wednesday that had the link for DSLREPORTS! Talk about timing! I was glad to find something here about this mystery.

aa.net is --- gone!

Service went dead yesterday morning 8-30. Tech support line just rings and rings and rings. So, I went down to their office address on Westlake Ave. Another tenant in the building told us they moved out on 8-29.

Absolutely No Warning

AAAAARGHHHHHH !!!

I HAD been a satisfied customer of AA.Net for several years, with the odd service gripe now and then.

Now, they appear to have packed their bags and disappeared into the night. Honestly, how difficult would it have been to give their customers just a little warning to allow them to make plans for a transition. Now it will takes WEEKS for a new service to be set up for me, all my e-mail getting lost in the meantime, and all my Quake Clan activities screwed up. Geee Thanks AA !

Another p!ssed *ff ex-aa.net customer

Well, my wife is sure wishing she had backed up her shell account a few days ago. Now all her data appears to be gone along with the ISP! Thanks, AA.... :-(

Good side of the story: We were able to get our Verizon Bronze+ ADSL service switched to Isomedia.com (after reading favorable reviews on dslreports.com) in less than four hours -- on a Friday before a three day weekend, no less! Kudos to both Isomedia and Verizon for pulling this off. BTW: price for Bronze+ service with Isomedia is comparable to AA ($22.45/mo).

I take it all back

I take back everything I said in the original review. In over two years I had no real problem with them.

I was gone in August, so was unpleasantly surprised when I suddenly couldn't get my email. That turned out to probably have been the remote ISP not getting updated DNS info correctly. In any case, the only thing possible to say in their favor is that they did let the email server run, so I've been able to keep checking the old account. One way to get off the spammers lists that I wouldn't recommend, however.
